Sergius II

Sergius II (? - 1019) was patriarch of Constantinople of 1001 to its death in 1019. It replaces patriarch after the death of the former patriarch Sinisios II which was simple laic. Of the family of Photias and higoumene of the monastery of Handbook, he thus becomes patriarch and will savagely be opposed to the reforms of Basile II in particular the re-establishment of the Allèlengyon. He also tried at the time of his reign to set up a duality at the head of the Christian church while cutting the relations with Rome without success.
