The Sergipe is one of the 27 States of Brazil. It is located in the North-East of the country, the Nordeste, on the Atlantic Littoral . With less than 22000 km ², it is the smallest State of the Brésil.
Its capital and main city are Aracaju. It is bordering on the States of the Alagoas, in north, and of Bahia, in the south and the east.
From 1637 with 1645, Sergipe passes under the domination of the Dutch, which corresponds to one period of relative stagnation of its economy. Once these recovered grounds, the Portuguese develop to with it the culture of the Canne with sugar and the bovine breeding.
In 1820, Sergipe becomes a autonomous harbor office, by dismemberment of the Capitainerie of Bay of All the Saints. The culture of the Coton develops considerably in the local economy at this period.
In 1855, the capital is transferred from São Cristóvão to Aracaju.
