Sergio Bagú Bejarano (Buenos Aires, January 10th 1911 - Mexico City, December 2nd 2002) was a Sociologue and Mexican Historien of origin Argentine. Bagú is regarded as one of the most important thinkers of Latin America of the twentieth century.

From Argentina in Mexico

Native of Argentina, Sergio Bagú was professor with the Université of Buenos Aires like in various universities of the Chile, of the the United States, the Venezuela, the Peru and Uruguay. But, it is with the Mexico, where he will move with the beginning of the year 1970, qu ' he will carry out largest of his career. He will then become professor and researcher with the Centro of Estudios Latinoamericanos of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma of Mexico City (UNAM) in 1974 when it will remain during 26 years.

Its work

Sergio Bagú will devote her sociological work to the comprehension of the role of the Latin America in the System-world and the world history. It was interested above all in nature of the Latin America and the development of the Capitalisme. Its work oscillates between the history of colonialism and the sociology of the domination. For Bagú, to better know the Latin America returned to better knowing the world.

Its most important works, colonial Economía of the sociedad (Economy of the colonial company - 1949) and social Estructura of Colonia (social Structure of the colony - 1952) had a major impact within Latin-American social sciences. In those, Bagú includes/understands the colonial history in Latin America like that of an insertion of this area in a world capitalist system.

Sergio Bagú was a pioneer of the Théorie of the dependence and dynamics center-peripheral which will also develop the sociologists, historians and economists Celso Furtado, Teothonio back Santos, Raúl Prebisch, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, Osvaldo Sunkel, and CEPAL. Following the example Fernand Braudel or of Immanuel Wallerstein, Bagú paid an special attention to the establishment of bonds between social sciences and in particular between the Histoire and the Sociologie.

Its engagement

Of its youth as a militant in the movement of the university reform in Argentina, a movement antifascist, Sergio Bagú will keep the urgency of the need for implying itself in the fight for the human rights. In exile in Mexico, it will continue its engagement to found the democracy in Argentina.
