Serge Moscovici

Serge Moscovici was born in 1925 with Brăila, Romania. He is director of the Laboratoire European of Social Psychology at the House of the social sciences to Paris.

Biography

Resulting from a family of Jewish origin it was excluded in 1938 from the college from Bucharest by the laws anti-semites. After having undergone the pogrom of Bucharest in January 1941, it was put at “obligatory work” until August 23rd 1944, to the entry of the Soviet armed in Romania. It is during these four years of war that it took taste with the reading and learned how to speak French with the contact, in particular, of Isidor Goldstein, future Isidore Isou (founder of the Lettrisme), and with which it founded the review Da , re-examined art and of published literature fine 1944. Da was quickly prohibited by the Censure into force.

In 1947 it left Romania and, like much, using the die of the “camps of displaced persons” passing by the Hungary, the Austria and the Italy, entered in France one year later.

In 1949 it obtained its license of Psychologie and in 1950 the diploma of the Institute of Psychology, Paris.

Starting from 1950, it obtained a “purse of refugee” to continue his studies with the Sorbonne and made, in 1961 its thesis, under the direction of Daniel Lagache, on the social representation of the Psychanalyse. In parallel, it is formed in epistemology and history of sciences by Alexandre Koyré and obtains an invitation, in the years 1960, with the the United States, the Institute for Advanced Studies of Princeton and with Stanford.

Later, it is with the New School for Social Research New York that it will be invited as professor and where it will teach, parallel to its seminars at the School of the high studies in social sciences in Paris where it founded the Laboratory of social Psychologie. It is in this place that a discipline moving is truly made up and where a whole generation of social psychologists was formed (Abric, Beauvois, Doise, Ghiglione, Herzlich, Jodelet, Rouquette, to mention only them). It is also, through its anthropological work and its engagement, a pioneer of the ecology policy in France.

It created in 1975 with the Maison of the social sciences the Laboratory European of Social Psychology, one of the first European networks of research.

He was professor in the InstitutJean-Jacques Rousseau of the Université of Geneva, with the the University of Louvain like to the Université of Cambridge and belonged to many academies and learned societies French and foreign.

He was Co-editor of the European Journal off Social Psychology (1969 - 1974), of the Journal for the Theory off Social Behavior (1985) and of the collection Social Psychologie (P.U.F) like editor (1982) of European Studies in Social Psychology (CUP) and of the Editions of the House of the Social sciences in Paris. He directed many works, contributed by about thirty chapters to various works and published a hundred articles in scientific magazines.

Honors

Many titles and distinctions were granted to him among which: Officer of the Legion of Honor, Doctor honoris causa of the London School off Economics , of the autonomous National university of Mexico, as well as universities of Bologna, Brussels, Geneva, Glasgow, Pécs, Rome and Seville.

In 2003, he became Lauréat of the Prix Balzan for its work in social psychology. According to the press release of the Foundation Balzan, “work of Serge Moscovici in the field of the company and social sciences is characterized by a great innovation: they upset the canonical paradigms of the discipline, renewed its methods of research and its orientations, created a European school of social psychology whose originality is universally recognized. In this field Serge Moscovici occupies from now on the eminent place which was, until the end of the Sixties, that of Jean Piaget. ”

In 2007, the American Psychological Association and the European Federation off Psychologists' Associations awarded to Serge Moscovici the prestigious prize Wundt - James 2007 for his exceptional work in social psychology.
