Serge Lifar

Serge Lifar is a Danseur, Chorégraphe and pedagog, born with Kiev the April 2nd 1905 and died in Lausanne the December 15th 1986. It is often described like a dancer of a great beauty physical and equipped with a radiant presence, one of most important of its generation.

Biography

Wire of a Russian civil servant, he undertakes studies within a military academy, and undergoes in Kiev the pangs of the war and the Révolution Bolshevik.

After having been the pupil of Bronislava Nijinska, the sister of large the Vaslav Nijinski, with Kiev, he works with Enrico Cecchetti and begins in 1923 within the Russian Ballets from Serge de Diaghilev and becomes First dancer of the troop.

He creates then principal the role of the ballets of George Balanchine and composes his first choreography, a resumption of Renard , in 1929.

Starting from 1930, Serge Lifar is an immense success, primarily in its own creations of ballets, with in particular a personal vision of the Specter of the pink (1931) and of the Afternoon of a fauna (1935).

During its double career of interpreter and choreographer, it spends 16 years to the Opéra of Paris, like First dancer initially, Ballet master then.

To the release it is returned Opera, directs the Nouveau Ballet of Monte Carlo, then returns to the Opera. In 1958, it fights in duel with the director of the ballet, the Marquis de Cuevas.

It continues its choreographic activity throughout the world until 1969, then founds and animates with passion the choreographic Institute of the Opera and the University of the dance. It bids its farewell with the scene in 1956 in the role of Albert in Gisele .

It will have obtained direction of the Opera of Paris some important reforms, of which the creation of a class of proverb and weekly introduction of one evening reserved exclusively for the dance.

Lifar is also the author of many theoretical books on the Ballet and the Histoire of the dance. It rests with the Russian cemetery of Holy-Genevieve-of-Wood.
