Serge Chaloff
Serge Chaloff (born the November 24th 1923 with Boston/Massachusetts, dead the July 16th 1957 in the same city) was a saxophonist of Jazz.
Chaloff is the son of the pianist of the Symphony orchestra of Boston, Julius Chaloff, and of Margaret Chaloff, piano teacher to the Berklee College off Music and which had inter alia as raises Keith Jarrett, Steve Kuhn, Herbie Hancock and Richard Twardzik. Itself studied the piano and the saxophone before beginning as musician with Boyd Raeburn and Georgia Auld. It acquired a certain notoriety dice 1945 as saxophonist soloist of the orchestra of Jimmy Dorsey. The following year, it integrated the second orchestra of Woody Hermann in which played in particular Stan Getz, Zoot Sims and Herbie Steward.
In 1947 it recorded its first tracks as leader with Red Rodney, Earl Swope, George Wallington, Curley Russell and Tiny Kahn. Because of its addiction to heroin, it became during the following years persona non grata on the scene of the jazz.
About 1950 Chaloff on the occasion to play New York with Bud Powell and Earl Swope but no recording recalls this period. In 1952 it returned to Boston and played with Twardzik. It integrated the Steve Allen Show and was the leader of an orchestra of Jazzclub. It is in 1954 that it recorded the disc The Fabel off Mabel with Herb Pomeroy and Charlie Mariano and the following year a disc with Boots Mussulli.
In 1956 it recorded with Los Angeles the album Blue Serge with Sony Clark, Leroy Vinnegar and Philly Joe Jones. At that time it was in a wheel chair, suffering of a tumor of the spinal column.
