Serenity

Synopsis of the televised series

In 2517, the Alliance made a success of the Unification of planets.

The captain Malcolm Reynolds, independence ex-sergeant, vogue with his crew on the Serenity , vessel of class Firefly of third generation, with the mounting of well remunerated odd jobs. In way, it takes on its board some passengers, including two fugitive, Simon Tam, a doctor, and his River sister.

Synopsis

The captain Malcolm Reynolds went voluntary for the freedom fighters in the war against Alliance. During the battle of the Serenity valley, its side went. In addition to losing the war, it lost the faith. Malcolm thus decided to become captain of its own vessel, which it names ironically Serenity. Having to gain its bread in all possible, illegal ways or not, it takes on its board passengers. Two of them are the fugitive ones, sought by the Alliance, which send this time an agent, the Operator.

The action takes again a few months after where the televised series stop.

Joss Whedon learned much from its experiment to the small screen. The need to present a history in 42 minutes forces a realizer to become effective, to get rid of the scenes which, however quite satisfactory, are not really necessary to the narration. Whereas the series Firefly enabled us to know several characters, the film was to concentrate on two or three, not more. It is what made Whedon well here. One is interested in Mal, River and the Operator. They are not presented to us like unidimensional beings. Malcolm has its faults, the Operator knows what it is and has a clear thinking which makes it conscious of its acts and their consequences. It is of these unpleasant that one admires, or at least that one does not reject a reverse of the hand as a caricature of pure spite. Even River, which undergoes an important transformation towards the end of film, is presented as a girl who must do itself an awakening.

The scene of the beginning, which voluntarily puts to us in imbalance, shows us that the history which will follow will not be as foreseeable as one could expect it. Those which know the work of Joss Whedon know that its characters are human and their actions have consequences.

Joss Whedon, famous for the televised series Buffy against the vampires and Angel, always created human characters whose decisions have quite real consequences. Serenity, as well as the series Firefly which inspired it, do not make exception. The hero of the history, the captain, is not the typical hero of the American Cinéma. He does not follow the model of the strong hero to the beginning, in crisis in the medium and the return in strength to the end. He is primarily the same one throughout film. What exchange are not its actions, but its motivations. What it did at the beginning of film, it made it because its experiment guided it. At the end, it found a goal which pushes it, the guide. In fact, To rivet, Badly and the Operator undergo each one a transformation. To rivet realizes that it has the capacity to save, while being sacrificed, his/her brother who dealt with it. The Operator accepts the result of his confrontation with Mal. Badly its optics sees transformed by the faith.

Faith

In the first episode of the series Firefly, one learns that Malcolm is devoted to its faith. When it loses the war, its faith undergoes the same fate. It rejects any religious symbol then and especially declares its Athéisme with which wants to hear it, in Sheperd Book.

It is the Operator who will make him understand that the faith can cause motivation. It does not find the faith as a God, on the other hand, it finds a reason to fight. Whereas it found amusing to put a spine in the foot of alliance, to expose the government and their plan of " pacification" becomes a revenge for the defeat on the freedom fighters, and it circle is buckled.

Morality

The captain poses gestures during the film which one usually does not allot to the hero. But is amorales? Or is this the situations which influence the motivations? By three times Badly car on a man without weapon. Even if one of these times, it is not any doubt in the spirit of the captain whom it was a question of the thing to make, Zoë is not agreement. One can argue that if this scene had been held at the end of film, Mal would have made another choice. It is one of the strong points which one finds among characters of Joss Whedon: consequences of the actions posed by characters who have emotions, luggage.

Anecdotes

This film is a mixture of Space operated and of Western which takes again the intrigue and the actors of the series Firefly . One can read a critic of the utopian project also there " to improve the humanité" through science.

Those which left the Ground to go in the Solar system where the action of film proceeds took several generations to go there. One can deduce from it that the apparatuses do not go more quickly than the Speed of light.

One does not hear noise when the action proceeds in space, contrary with many science fiction films.

the banknotes carry symbols Chinese, Hebrew and Arab.

the two principal planets of alliance are Sihnon (Sino, for Chinese) and Londinium (for London).

forty Planet S and the Moon S were terraformées.

the America and the China influenced the course of the history so much that, 500 years later, everyone usually speaks the English and the Mandarin. In film, the swearwords are in Mandarin spoken in Taiwan.

Summer Glau, which plays the part To rivet, appeared in the episode " Slides of the éternité" series Angel, where she plays a ballerina. Its talent for the dance has surprised the Chorégraphe combat, which required that one install a post in the bar. Glau indeed can, with its foot, to strike with the back of the head somebody which is behind it.

Nathan Fillion played the part of Caleb in several episodes of the last season of Buffy.

Adam Baldwin played the part of Hamilton in several episodes of the last season of Angel.

Gina Torres played the part of Jasmine in several episodes of the fourth season of Angel.

Ron Glass is better known for its role of the detective " Ron Harris" in the televised series Barney Miller, which played of 1975 to 1982.

Glass, which plays the part of a Christian Pasteur in a universe with Buddhist majority, is itself Buddhist.

Jonathan Woodward, with Jeff Ricketts and Carlos Jacott, fact part of the trio of actors to have played in Buffy, Angel and Firefly. It does not appear in film, perhaps because it died in the three series!

Andy Umberger, which plays the part of the captain of the vessel of Alliance " Dortmunder" , also played in Buffy and Angel, but not in Firefly.

Around film

According to the magazine Screens , Universal would have been turned over against the fans of the series with which it production company had required to create a word of mount favorable before the exit of film. One year after the exit of film, Universal indeed threatens of lawsuit the fans who would continue to sell mershandising with the image of film.
