Septentrional Banat

The district of septentrional Banat , in Serb Cyrillic Serb Севернобанатскиокруг and in transliterated Severnobanatski okrug, is a district of Serbia, located in the autonomous province of Voïvodine. It extends on the Serb Banat and part of the Bačka. In 2002, it counted 165.881 inhabitants. The administrative center is the town of Kikinda.

Two municipalities have a majority of Serbes: Kikinda (76,43%) and Novi Kneževac (59,53%). Four municipalities are inhabited by a majority of Hungarian: Ada (76,64%), Čoka (51,56%), Kanjiža (86,52%) and Senta (80,51%).

Culture

The town of Kikinda is famous for its painters, in particular Teodor Ilić Češljar, Nikola Aleksić, Đura Pecić and Đura Jakšić, at the same time painter and writer.
