Sepp Vees

Sepp Vees is a German painter born the November 11th 1908 in Gundershoffen (Munsingen), deceased on February 1st 1989 with Flacht, pertaining to the current German expressionnism. He always lived in Facht, a small village of the Bade-Wurtemberg. He was defined even as being to him a expressive painter : to paint the colors of Paul Cézanne with the spontaneousness of max Slegogt, Lovis Corinth and of Liebermann, here what it will try to express throughout his life through his fabrics…

1927-1929 : Studies with the academy of the fine arts of Cassel. He was the pupil of Georg Burmester.

1929 : Member cofounder of the Stuttgarter Neuen Sezession

Belonging to the group of Stuttgarter Neuen Sezession, the new pictorial movement, born in sign of protest and of dissension as for the rigid principles of the old group: “Stuttgarter Sezession”. Sepp Vees will take part consecutively in two of the three great exposures of the group in 1931 and 1932. At the time, the artists eager to rejoin this group were to pass three times in front of an official jury, without any certainty to be able to expose one day…

The “Stuttgarter neuen Sezession” is born officially in 1929: Manfred Pahl (1900 - 1994) it is only to have also belonged to the old one Sezession- Wilhelm Geyer (1900-1968), Manfred Henninger (1894-1985), Alfred Lehmann (1899-1979) and Gustav Schopf (1888-1986), but also Erhardt Brude, Wilhelm H.Kohler or Heinrich Wagenbaur will be the investigators. The first exposure of the group takes place on August 20th, 1929, in Stuttgart.

1929-1932 : Study with the academy of the fine arts of Stuttgart, under the supervision of Robert Breyer .

1933 : Final installation with Facht. Its workshop is in the content of the garden, a harbor of inspiration and peace.

1939-1945 : Pacifist convinced, he is initially secretary with Paris for the mode of the time, then led on the Russian face, where he occupies and looks after the horses… He will return to Germany in 1945, on a mounting of fortune.

After 1945 : Independent painter.

He accomplished many study trips in Italy, Holland, Belgium, France in particular in Brittany, Austria, England, Turkey and Tunisia… Of these various voyages, he remains many fabrics. Its subjects of predilection are the landscapes of the neighborhoods of the campaign of Flacht, but also many dead natures (bouquets of flower, fruit and vegetables,…). He carries out good number of stained glasses for churches - severely damaged during the war -, both in Germany and in England, but also for schools and buildings communal in the surroundings of Stuttgart. He also devotes himself to ceramics.

Nearly 80 fabrics were offered in donation by the children of the family to the small commune of Flacht and are visible today in a museum which bears its name: the gallery Sepp Vees.

The majority of the fabrics of Sepp Vees are in particular collections, as well in Germany as abroad. A complete biography of the artist is currently under development and in 2008 the centenary of its birth will be celebrated.
