Sepal

In Botanical, a sepal is one of the foliaceous elements, generally green, of which the meeting composes the chalice and supports the Corolle Fleur.

The number of the sepals or their characteristics make it possible to describe the chalice:

  • monosépale: formed of only one sepal,
  • disépale: formed of two sepals or two distinct parts,
  • pentasépale: composed of five sepals,
  • polysépale: have several sepals.
  • dialysépale: have several individualized, separate sepals from/to each other.
  • gamosépale: the sepals are welded between them beyond half their length: when one draws one from them, the other sepals come too.

The sepals can sometimes resemble the Pétale S, as at the Tulipe. One speaks then about “Tépale”.
