Senones

Senones is a common French, located in the department of the the Vosges and the area Lorraine.

Geography

Senones is located in the valley of the Rabodeau, small right affluent of the Meurthe, which leaves its territory for Moyenmoutier with the altitude of 328 Mr. the commune culminates to 722 m with the Tête of Anteux . It is distant of 22 km the Saint-Dié-of-Vosges, of 81 km Nancy and 27 km of the Alsatian commune of Schirmeck by the Col of Hantz.

History

  • In the past Senonia , the city was built around the founded Benedictine abbey Saint-Pierre in 640 by Saint Gondelbert, archbishop of Direction, and built by Antoine of Pavia to XIe century. At the XVIIIe century, abbot Dom Calmet celebrates it continues the total rebuilding of the abbey started with his predecessors. One owes him in particular the large staircase decorated with a grid in Wrought iron of Jean Lamour. Voltaire comes to return visit in Dom calmet in 1754.
  • Senones was the capital of the Principauté of Salm-Salm, become French in 1793. Thus in 1806, was installed in the abbey of Senones, the first cotton mechanical spinning mill of the department of the Vosges by English John Heywood. Textile industry made considerable great strides during all the XIXe century. The last factory, the weaving of the abbey, closed its doors in 1992.
  • Senones was on the line of fire during four years during the First World War. It also was very tested during the second conflict: 354 men were off-set the October 6th 1944 and 245 of them perished in the concentration camps. For all these tests, the city was decorated with the Military Crosses 14-18 and 39-45.

Tourism

Leaving behind it its industrial past, Senones is rich of its history, but also of its surrounding nature. The solid mass of the Valley of Senones which leads towards the collar of Prayé and the Donon is one of the most beautiful forest fields of France, with its gardened groves of fir trees of beeches and spruces with many cascades which descend the slopes. All the valley lends itself to a form tourism increasingly directed towards the stays of rest, walk and patrimonial or natural discoveries.

Until the end of the Years 1970, the railroad to vapor of Rabodeau ensured a tourist animation: he traversed in 18 min the 9 driving km of Étival-Clairefontaine in Senones while passing by Moyenmoutier. He was given in service approximately Sunday on two by a group of impassioned amateurs.
