Senior of the College of the cardinals

This was the habit during centuries until Paul VI gave by Motu landlord Sacrum cardinalium consilio , capacity with the six cardinal-bishops to elect their Senior in 1965. This election must be confirmed by the pope.

Cardinal primus inter pares

Although the Senior (or the vice-senior in the event of absence or of incapacity) chairs the Sacré College , it does not have any capacity on the other cardinals. He is regarded as primus inter pares , first of them. There is no limiting age with this function.

At the end of does the election, the Senior request the assent of the elected official to the pontifical load by raising the question Acceptasne electionem of you canonice factam in Pontificem Height? and collects the name which it wishes to carry. If the elected official is not yet bishop, the Senior with the right to order it. If the Senior itself is elected, its assent is requested by the cardinal-bishop who has the most seniority.

By decree of Black and white X in 1914, at the time of its nomination, the Senior is seen allotting the diocese of Ostie while keeping its évêché suburbicaire. Before this decree and since 1150, the Senior replaced his évêché suburbicaire by those of Ostie and Velletri.
