Senegalese popular block
The popular Bloc Senegalese (bps) is at the same time an old political party Senegal board and a current formation of the same name.
History
First bps is born at the time of a congress which is held with Dakar from February 23rd to 25th 1957.Convergence of several movements, the democratic Block Senegalese (BDS), the democratic Union sénégalaise (UDS), the autonomous Mouvement casamançais (MAC) as well as a fraction of the Senegalese Popular movement (MPS) carried out by Abdoulaye Thiaw, this fusion was effective since August 1956.
The congress indicates Léopold Sédar Senghor as political leader and Mamadou Dia as General secretary.
January 11th, 1957, bps had organized a meeting in Dakar and had launched the African Convention, of which the ambition was to become a party for all AOF. Au préalable bps and the African democratic Rassemblement had tried in vain to approach. Senghor wishes whereas African Convention plays the part of a party representing the parliamentary group of the Indépendants of overseas of which he is member.
In 1958 African Convention and the African socialist Mouvement are linked to form the Parti the African gathering. Following this fusion bps joins the section sénégalaise Senegalese Parti of socialist action (PSAS) and forms the Union progressist sénégalaise.
Today a new party bears the same name. It obtained its legal recognition on October 16th 2002.
Organization
The head office of new bps is with Thiès. Its current General secretary is Souleymane Ndiaye " Brin".
