Sendmail

Sendmail is a electronic Mail server whose source code is open. It takes care of the delivery of emails.

Going down from the software ARPANET Delivermail, sendmail is a very flexible program supporting a large range of means of transfer and delivery of Email S, including popular smtp. The first version of sendmail was written by Eric Allman (Université of Berkeley) with the beginning of the year 1980 which had also written delivermail.

Sendmail is very criticized for its slowness, its complexity and its difficult maintenance in comparison with other MTA such as Qmail and Postfix. However, there remains the most popular MTA on Internet, which is certainly due to its implementation by defect in the various alternatives of Unix. A study of November 2001 estimates that 42% of the accessible waiters emails publicly use sendmail. A Backdoor used for the Débogage of the software was one of the causes of the proliferation of one of the first towards data processing, the Ver Morris.

It was established in Mac OS X with the versions 10.0 to 10.3.

Configuration

There exist three means of configuring sendmail:

  • is directly by modifying the file sendmail.cf;
  • is by using the whole of macros M4 writes by the developers of Sendmail;
  • is by using the kit Jussieu.

Interfacing

Sendmail allows the programming of filters of any type through particular interface of the name of milter . This interface is not accessible directly and must thus be specified during the compilation of Sendmail. This interface specifies various functions in language C to be redefined in the filter. The functions defined by the filter are then called during the treatment of the email by Sendmail and, this, to various key stages like the reading of the heading or the body of the message what thus makes it possible to modify the latter before sending the email towards outside or the final box. Various software makes use of this interface in particular:

  • Bogom: an interface milter for the filter of spam bogofilter
  • Clamav can be compiled with the support milter
  • Sendmail-milter: an interface in Perl allowing to make filters
  • MimeDefang: another interface in Perl
