The Sénat is the Upper House Parlement of Senegal, removed in 2001, but restored in 2007.

History

The Senate is set up first once on January 24th, 1999, under the mode of the president Abdou Diouf, within the framework of its policy of Décentralisation. It includes/understands 60 Senators, of which 45 are elected by members of the National Assembly and representatives of the local government agencies. 12 are indicated by the President of the Republic and the 3 others are elected by the Senegaleses residing abroad. The majority of the opposition parties do not approve this creation and launch a watchword of Boycott.

On the 10.775 votes cast, the Socialist party (PS) collects 9.840, that is to say 91,32%, and obtains 58 seats. The African Parti independence (FEEDS) joins together 609 votes, that is to say 5,65%, which is worth a seat to him. Finally the Senegalese Liberal party (PLS) must be satisfied with 326 votes, that is to say 3,03%, and also obtains a seat.

Then the Upper House is removed, for reasons of economies, following a constitutional referendum organized on January 7th, 2001.

She is restored in May 2007.

Yielding the " perchoir" National Assembly with Macky Sall, Pape Diop becomes the president of this new Senate at the conclusion of the election of October 3rd, 2007. Only continuing candidate, it carries it by 99 votes out of 100.

Organization

The Senate is composed of 100 members, including 35 elected officials by the indirect suffrage in the departments and 65 others chosen by the president of the Republic.

The president of the Senate is elected for five years.
