Semur-in-Brionnais

Semur-in-Brionnais is a common French, located in the department of Saône-et-Loire and the area Burgundy. It is classified among the most beautiful villages of France.

Geography

History

Xe at the 14th century, the barons de Semur were a powerful family. Thus Dalmace Ier, known as Dalmace the Large one (1000? with 1048) Maria her Hélie daughter with the duke of Burgundy Robert Ier. More famous family member of Semur was another son of Dalmace Large, Holy Hugues (1024-1109), which became Grand Abbot of Cluny, and a big role in the whole of Christendom played.

  • Holy Hugues (1024-1109): native of Semur-in-Brionnais, fifth large abbot of the Order of Cluny.

  • Gilbert Génébrard (1536-1597), French theologist
  • Bouthier of Rochefort : deputy of the third Republic, precursor of GAEC (groupings of farmers). It bequeathed its fortune to the commune and created an old people's home for the employees and the sharecroppers of the agricultural world.
