Sempervirent means which remains always green (one says also " persistant"). In Botanical, it indicates a plant which keeps its sheets throughout the year, in opposition to the trees with foliage Caduc.

The persistence of the sheets at the plants can vary from just a year (the fall of the old sheets operating shortly after the appearance of the new sheets), until a 45 years maximum observed at the Pin of Bristlecone ( Pinus longaeva Ewers & Schmid 1981). However, very few species present a persistence going beyond 5 years.

Another exceptional case exists at the Welwitschia , a African Gymnosperme which produces only two sheets which grow continuously during the life of the plant but which is étiolent on the level of the Apex, giving them between 20 to 40 years of persistence of foliar fabrics.
