Semitrailer

A semitrailer is a road Remorque intended for the Transport of Marchandise S whose characteristic is that it rests on one or more Essieu X with the back and on the vehicle tractor with before via a platform called Sellette , so that the tractor supports a notable part of the weight of the trailer and its loading. The semitrailer, when it is uncoupled rests on the ground via two crutches which can be ordered hydraulically, but which is, for reasons of mechanical simplicity and maintenance costs, most of the time manually ordered (by a crank united with gears ordering a toothed rack).

To lower or manually reassemble the crutches during the fixing or of unhooking of a semitrailer takes 3 to 4 minutes, and a few seconds with a hydraulic system.

By extension, one calls also semitrailer (male term) the unit formed by the tractor and the trailer. There exist many types and dimensions of semitrailers, according to the kind of transport to be carried out.

Types of semitrailers

Carry container, plate van, refrigerating (flowers, meats, vegetables), cattle float, cistern with food liquids, chemicals or cistern with powders, Savoyard, bucket public works or cereal bucket, semitrailer with extensible frame for the transport of products big length, semitrailer reel stand, flattened semitrailer, carry-machines, carry-barks for the transport of Bois, carry-cars, etc…. One can also adapt various machines on a semitrailer, in the case of special work: cranes, military material, vehicles of help, intervention, or vehicles assigned to special work (forestry development, the Highways Departments, maintenances of networks, clearing out or hydrocurage, vehicles mining), cinematographic lightings, podiums for spectacles etc….

Axles

  • a semitrailer with 2 axles names also a semitrailer Tandem.
  • a semitrailer with 3 axles names a semitrailer Tridem.
  • a semitrailer with 1 axle names simply a semitrailer an axle.
  • One can also employ the " term; axe" to indicate an axle (example: a semitrailer 3 axes}.

Certain semitrailers are equipped with hinged axles (for reasons of economy at the time of the ways with vacuum), as well as axles autovireurs (generally the last axle) in order to reduce the wear of the tires in the curves. The hinged axle is rather current in Europe, the axle autoviror is usual in certain countries (Italy), less in others (France, Great Britain).
