Seminar of Sherbrooke
The Seminar of Sherbrooke , so known under the name of Seminar St-Charles-Borromée , is one of the oldest institutions of private education of Sherbrooke, founded in 1875. The Seminar offered at the origin the traditional course, the commercial course and the scientific course. Gradually, these two last were abandoned with the profit of the traditional course.
In 1954, the Seminar becomes the Université of Sherbrooke. The first bases of a catholic university and French-speaking person in Estrie are founded. The Seminar takes again its name and its vocation in 1959 at the time of the foundation of the University of Sherbrooke such as we know it today. In 1968, the traditional course is given up and the institution raises from now on program of the Minister of education of Quebec.
Today, the Seminar offers the five years of the secondary course and several collegial programs and of continuing education.
In 2005, the charter having been modified, the posts of vice-chancellor (named originally by the Diocese of Sherbrooke and the managing director (laic function) were amalgamated as a general vice-chancellor-director. For the first time since the beginning of its existence, the Seminar is directed only by one laic, André Métras.
In 2006, the port of an obligatory collection of clothing is founded for the pupils of the secondary order. The collection of clothing, of style oxfordien and very traditional, harmoniously raises the traditional colors of the Seminar: red and yellow.
At the sporting level, the Seminar of Sherbrooke has a history filled very well with its representative teams, the Barons . The sporting teams of the school knew to perpetuate traditions of excellence in several sports, like American football, the soccer (European football), the basketball and volley ball to name only these.
