Seminar
A seminar (of the Latin seminarium , “seedbed”, root semin- , “seed, vital principle”) is a establishment of higher education intended to form catholic priests. It gives a biblical training, theological, philosophical and Pastorale. The students of the seminar are called the seminarists.
The small seminar was often one of the only means of informing itself.
By analogy, one calls seminar a conference or a meeting on a precise topic. One speaks thus about “seminar of company”.
Statistics World S of the the Vatican
According to the Statistical World S published by the the Vatican ( Annuarium statisticum ecclesiae of 2004), the number of catholic seminarists in the world increased by 77% between 1978 and 2004. This increase is Essentiellement due to the Continent S African, American Asiatique and . This figure is to be compared with the increase of 45% of the number of catholics in the world, parallel with the increase in the World population.
For the same period, the number of Diacre S permanent passed from 5500 to 32000. In Europe, the number of deacons multiplied by ten.
On the other hand in France the number of seminarists does not cease decreasing since the end of the Second world war.

It is it should be noted that in average a seminarist on two will become indeed catholic priest.
With the reading of these figures, one notes that, if it is true that the total number priests reached a maximum between these two dates, the number of seminarists increased on the other hand much, definitely more than the number of baptized. This increase is however very unequal. Their number remains stationary in Europe, which is however encouraging vis-a-vis the notable fall of the number of priests in this part of the world.
In America, the number of seminarists is in big rise, contrary to the number of priests which has reached a maximum for 25 years. A ventilation between Latin America (which suffers from a lack of priests for a long time and where the Catholic church undergoes the very hard competition of a series of Protestant Churches) and North America, would be desirable.
But they are young Christendoms of Asia and Africa which are distinguished particularly. The number of seminarists increases of more than once and half in Asia and of more than 300% in Africa.

The formation of the Prêtres organizes in three great stages of formation called cycles. The first cycle carried out in two years includes/understands mainly a philosophical and biblical formation fundamental. The seminarists remain all the week in the enclosure of the seminar and join their family or a parish of insertion the weekend. The second cycle carried out in three years associates a formation in fundamental Théologie, pastoral Théologie, moral Théologie, and in Bible with an obligatory pastoral insertion in end of the week. The third cycle is almost only devoted to pastoral insertion. The candidates with the presbytérats continue to receive a formation at the beginning of semaire or during an continuing education.
