  • Included/understood in the province of Auvergne in 1789,
  • the commune of Saint-Leger was attached to him in 1843.

In 1790, Sembadel (43160) was called Saint-Badel if one refers to the " TOPOGRAPHIC DICTIONARY OF the DEPARTMENT OF the HAUTE-LOIRE including/understanding the OLD AND MODERN PLACE NAMES, written by Mr. Augustin CHASSAING, archivist paleographer, judge with the civil Court of Puy, supplemented and published by Mr. Antoine JACOTIN, archivist of the department of the Haute-Loire, correspondent of the Ministry for the State education for historical work, prize winner of the Institute. PARIS. HMSO. MDCCCCVII." , consultable work on the site of the National library of http://gallica.bnf.fr/ France:

“Before even knowing the exit of the parliamentary debates, a commission of sixteen members, made up of the deputies of the province and delegates of the city of Puy, Montfaucon, Yssingeaux, Saint-Didier-the-Séauve and Brioude, meets in Puy on January 27th, 1790, “to agree on the limits of the districts of the department of Calved”. The debates were certainly stormy, since two police chiefs refused to assist until the end of the meeting. After having refused the applications of the towns of Craponne, Saint-Didier, Tence and Pradelles tending to obtain to be chief towns of district, the commission decided that these chief towns would be established in Puy and Brioude and that, for the southernmost part of the department, the towns of the Monistrol-on-Loire, of Montfaucon and of Yssingeaux would alternate between them for the civil administration, but that the seat of the court would be definitively allotted to the one of them. One carried out then the division of the department in three districts and thirty-two cantons and with the distribution of the 252 communes, of which 129 had belonged to the province of Auvergne, 90 with that of Velay, 15 with that of Gévaudan, 10 with that of Vivarais and 8 with that of Drill. Here how this distribution was made (…) II. DISTRICT OF BRIOUDE. (9 cantons.) (…) XX. Canton of Chair-God (17 municipalities): Berbezit, Bonneval, Chair-God, the Vault, the Vault-Bertin, Cistrières, Connangles, Cat-like, Jullianges, Laval, Malvières, Walls, Saint-Badel , Saint-Leger, Saint-Stake, Saint-Green, Saint-Victor. ” (Introduction page XXXII)

“§ 5. Names Of ROMANCE ORIGIN. (Ecclesiastical Order). Communal onomastics borrowed from the Christian religion a great number of terms, of which the ones belong to common nouns and the others to names of saints (…) The names of saints enter the composition of sixty-eight communal terms: Saint-Andrew, Sanctus Andreas; Saint-frames (2), Sanctus Arconcius (...) It is naturally necessary to include/understand in this category the communes of Blesle, Ble¬silla, from which the Sancta adjective disappeared, and Sambadel, form faded of the old denomination Sanctus Baudelius . ” (Introduction, page VII)

§ II. LEGAL DISTRICTS. 1. Velay. (…) in 1321, the baronnie of Lively, including/understanding the villages of Lively, Céaux, the Vault-Bertin, Cat-like, Monlet, Saint-Badel , Saint-Just-near-Chomelix, Saint-Leger, Saint-Stake-of-Walls and Game preserve-Saint-Honorat, as well as the mandements of Cereix, Saint-Paulien and Saint-Privat-with Allier were incorporated in the bailliage of Auvergne. (Introduction, pages XIX and XX) “SEMBADEL, canton of Chair-God. - Ecclesia of Saint-Badel , 1252 (Saint-Agrève). -- Parochia de Sambadel, 1275 (Chair-God, Saint-Allyre). - Parochia Sancti Badelli , 1331 (J. of Peyre, notary). - Parochia de Sambadello, 1459 (idem, Vazeilhes). - Sambadal, 1548 (the Rhone, Saint-Antoine-of-Viennese, Saint-Victor). - Sembadel-Saint-Leger, XIXe S. (nomencl. stations). Old toll of the lords of Lively removed by stop of the Council of October 26th, 1744. In 1789, Sembadel belonged to the province of Auvergne, the election of Brioude, the subdelegation of Chair-God and the competence of Riom. Its parish church, diocese of Puy and archpriest of Saint-Paulien, were dedicated to Roch saint; the abbot of Chair-God was outlet drain. ” (Page 267)

Badel (like Baudel, Baudelle, Bauzille, Bauzély, etc) could be an alternative of Baudile or Baudille. Originating in Orleans, holy Latin Baudille '' Baudilius '', from Germanic “the bald” (daring) and “hild” (combat), celebrated on May 20th, went évangéliser the area of Nimes where he was decapitated, in 295, to have stopped a sacrifice pagan, and buried on the place even of its execution. A monastery, built around its tomb, was destroyed in 1563, at the beginning of the Protestant reform, and its relics were dispersed. A small underground oratory was arranged with the Three Fountains (according to the legend, the head of the saint, while rebounding, would have made spout out three sources). The worship of Baudilius was spread far from Nimes as the names testify some to the following communes: Saint-Baudille (38), Saint-Bauzeil (09), Saint-Beauzeil (82), Saint-Bauzély (30), Saint-Beauzély (12), Saint-Bauzile (07 and 48), Saint-Bauzille (34), Saint-Beauzille (81), Saint-Beauzire (43100 and 63), Saint-Baudelle (53), Saint-Baudel (18)…
