In data processing, the semantic work station indicates a new way of creating, of automating and of structuring of the data.

Description

After the revolution of the graphical interface initiated by the Macintosh in the Years 1980, the semantic work station is the only deep change appeared these last years in the personal computing. It is a new paradigm which leads to an advanced way to create, automate and structure of the data. The semantic work station brings three principal changes: the availability of contextual information on the desk of the user, the passage of a hierarchical storage of information to a semantic storage, and the advent of procedures advanced to assist each one in the daily use of the computers.

The semantic work station is the implementation of technologies which make the computers able to collect information with the manner of the human brain.

One of the characteristics of the brain is indeed to be able to build the associations, enriched progressively by the experiment, which allow about answering at any moment new interrogations or questionings, by generating " dynamiquement" elements of necessary informations.

On the same model, a semantic work station allows the operating system and the various applications which are lodged there, to store and enrich dynamically by information. It becomes possible to ask for example an application of final improvement of photograph like The GIMP or Photoshop for example, to open all the images which were published by such user in the family.

The semantic work station opens enormous prospects for the groupware. The availability of technologies customer-rich person and Poste at station indeed allow to the users semantic work stations to share knowledge, and this while being located or not on same the Lan.

History

The research tools on the personal computer (also called work station), such as Beagle (in the world of the Free software), Google Desktop (under Windows XP or Windows 2000 ) or Spotlight (under Mac OS X Tiger ), appeared in second half of the Years 2000, constitute the first embryos of semantic work station.
