Selma Lagerlöf , born in Marbacka in the Värmland, in Sweden the November 20th 1858 and deceased in 1940 was a Swedish writer.

It was the fourth child of lieutenant Erik Gustaf Lagerlöf and his wife Louise Wallroth. His/her parents belonged to old families of Värmland. Most of what she tells on this area of Sweden finds its origin in the legends and accounts which were told to him during its childhood by its family. Its future work will nourish folklore and legends värmalandais which watered its childhood.

She taught as teacher at the school of girls of Landskrona of 1885 with 1895. The family field Mårbacka is sold in 1887. The Saga de Gösta Berling is published in 1891. In this romantic epopee, it lets burst its imagination a naive and fantastic in style rate/rhythm and lyric.

Successes that it gains with this work, as with the Marvellous Voyage from the Nile Holgersson through Sweden in 1906-1907 will enable him to carry out its dream, to repurchase the family field in 1910. It is the first woman to receive the Nobel Prize of literature, in 1909.

It is the first woman with being elected with the Swedish Académie in 1914. In 1916, it publishes a pacifist novel: Exiled the . She dies the March 16th 1940.
