The selenite is a form of particular crystallization of the Gypse (sulfate hydrated of calcium, of chemical formula: CaSO·2HO) which is characterized by its transparency.
The name selenite comes from Latin selenitis who meaning “moon stone”, because one says to see the glare of the moon there. It should not however be confused with the Feldspath commonly called Pierre of the moon.
It is also named “glossed spar” when it takes a fibrous structure.
