The December 7th 1988 with 11:41 (local time), a Séisme of 6,9 on the scale of Richter devastates the area of Spitak. In less than eight seconds, a fault opened over a twenty kilometers length. According to the estimates, between twenty-five thousand and a hundred and thousand people died, for the majority under the debris of the buildings not designed for this kind of catastrophe. The rescuers could save only eighty people captive of the debris. There are officially fifteen thousand five hundred and twenty-four wounded.
Immediately after this earthquake, the Nuclear plant of Metsamor was stopped by security measure.
French artists, carried out by Charles Aznavour, recorded a song, For you Arménie , to come to assistance financially of the victims of the catastrophe.
