The department of Seine-et-Oise is old a department French, which was identified by code 78. It was one of the 83 departments created with the French revolution, the March 4th 1790 pursuant to the law of the December 22nd 1789, starting from part of the province of Île-de-France.

It was removed on January 1st 1968, pursuant to the law of the July 10th 1964, and constituted the departments of the the Essonne, the Val-d'Oise and the Yvelines. Some of its communes also formed of the parts of the Hauts-de-Seine (9 communes), of the Seine-Saint-Denis (16 communes) and of the the Valley-of-Marne (18 communes).

Its chief town was Versailles, and it had as Corbeil sub-prefectures (become Corbeil-Essonnes, transferred to Évry in 1966), Étampes (until in 1926), Mantes (become Mantes-the-Pretty) (except between 1926 and 1943), Pontoise, Rambouillet (as from 1812), and, after 1962, Montmorency, Palaiseau, Raincy and Saint-Germain-in-Bush hammer. Two other districts were still added in 1966, Argenteuil and Étampes, to prepare the new departments. The department had 11 districts, 68 cantons and 688 communes at the time of its suppression (there are today 686 communes within its limits).

Its population rose with 2  298  931 inhabitants in 1962 (last census before its suppression), and would exceed 4,5 million inhabitants today. Its surface was of approximately 5  600 km ².

It was surrounded by the departments of the Oise in north, of Seine-et-Marne in the east, the Loiret in the south, Eure-et-Loir and the the Eure in the west. Moreover, the department of the the Seine, which included/understood Paris and its close relation Banlieue, was entirely wedged in Seine-et-Oise.

  • 1800: (February 17th, law of the 28 pluviôse year VIII): creation of the districts: Corbeil, Stamps, Mantes, Pontoise and Versailles, divided into 36 cantons
  • 1812: creation of the district of Rambouillet
  • 1882: creation of the canton of Raincy
  • 1919: creation of the canton of Villeneuve-saint-Georges
  • 1922: creation of the canton of Aulnay-sous-Bois
  • 1924: creation of the canton of Houses-Laffitte
  • 1926: (decree of September 10th): removal of the districts of Stamps and Mantes
  • 1931: creation of the canton of Taverny
  • 1943: (law of November 26th): restoration of the district of Mantes
  • 1962: (decree of November 7th): creation of the districts of Montmorency, Palaiseau, Raincy and Saint-Germain-in-Bush hammer
  • 1964: (decree of January 28th): the number of cantons passes from 41 to 67
  • 1964: (law of July 10th): the removal of the department is programmed
  • 1965: (decree of February 25th): the chief towns of the new departments are indicated
  • 1966: (decree of June 2nd): the creation of the district of Argenteuil, the restoration of the district of Stamps, the transfer of the chief town of the district of Corbeil to Évry, the creation of the canton of Saint-Arnoult-in-Yvelines and some transfers of cantons between districts make coincide the limits of the districts and the cantons with the limits of the future departments
  • 1967: (decree of July 20th): creation of the cantons of the new departments
  • 1967: (decree of September 19th): the complete coming into effect of the law of July 10th, 1964 is fixed at January 1st, 1968
  • 1968: (January 1st): disappearance of the department of Seine-et-Oise (entered according to the general advices of the new departments, elected in 1967)
