Seine-Scheldt connection
The Project
The connection the Seine-Scheldt is a Projet of inland waterway to large gauge between the river basin of the Scheldt and that of the Seine. It includes in particular in France a channel length a 105 km having to connect the Canal the Dunkirk-Scheldt to the Oise (This channel, which is the showpiece of the project, is known also under the name of “channel Seine-North-Europe”). It is one of the 30 priority projects of the future Réseau transeuropéen of transport (RTE-T). Its overall costs are estimated at 2,6 billion euros (2004).The interest of this project is to put in communication the Île-de-France, first French economic area, of which the Port authority of Paris (first French river port), as well as the Norman ports of the Havre and of Rouen, with the ports of Dunkirk, Antwerp and Rotterdam, like with the river system of the Benelux and the basin of the the Rhine. It would currently disenclose two segments in dead end of the French navigable network with large gauge. It mainly aims at reducing the highway of the North (highway A1) of the important traffic of Heavy truck S which encumbers it. It is likely however to move rail traffic, which is a more direct competitor of the water way than road transport. The river traffic on this axis would be, according to the studies carried out by VNF, quadrupled by 2015 and carried to 18 million tons annually.
A public survey on the project Seine-North Europe proceeded from January 15th, 2007 to March 15th, 2007. The program of this project aims at a Déclaration of public utility in 2007 for a startup towards 2012.
