The Sarrasine Door

Carry enclosing part of the ramparts of first enclosure, it was built at the 12th century. Named “Sarrasine” because of the harrow which closed it gives to the place of Valat a perfect environment for the evenings of festival (nights of Valat in particular). Beside the door two rocks are visible (“Two-Rocks”) which appeared when the medieval houses - which were used as defenses with the castle - collapsed in the Sixties. The Sarrasine door and the Two-Rocks are classified (historic building for the door).

The fountain Make Upstream

Formerly named: the “fountain of Love”; it is about the one of the oldest water points of the village. This fountain carries the weapons of Seillans: a white crescent on crowned red bottom of fortifications. This blazon was copied from that of Lord Bouquier, Seigneur of Marseilles, Co-lord of Seillans and knight of the Ordre of Malta (12th century). The weapons of Lord Bouquier was increasing on a bottom of Azure (blue), the town council decided that those of Seillans would be on bottom of mouth (red bottom). The crown which dominates the whole means that Seillans is a strengthened village. It should be known that from the Moyen-âge a city could borrow the weapons of another to do to them his on the condition of them of changing at least an element of the blazon (the color, the form, to add/withdraw an element).

The church Leger Saint

It holds its name of Leger bishop of Autun which undergoes the martyr in 671. It was set up at the 11th century as the castle but it became the real religious center of the village only at the 17th century. Inside you will be able to admire a stoup of the 15th century offered by the Count de Vintimille, of paintings of 16th and the 19th century, a Triptyque of 16th, and two Rétables of 17th.

The castle

It took its current form at the 11th century, but since the Protohistoire the site was inhabited. First of all by a tribe Celto-Ligurian which probably gave its name to Seillans, then by the Romans and finally, with christianization, by the monks of the abbey Saint Victor of Marseilles.

The street of Valat

In the beginning “Valat” means ditch, thus this street was located in what were the ditches of the castle to the Middle Ages. The town hall was built at the 12th century. It was used as Bastion of stop and closed the village by 3 doors located under its vault.

The small square Make Jordany

This street is located on part of the second rampart of the village. At the 14th century, there was a Pont-levis. There was then no wall of defense, the dwellings - joined together and with the very high walls - being used as enclosure at the village. “Make” coming from “fountain”, the village correctly was always supplied out of water; and this thanks to the Romans who established drains bringing to the village the water of the sources of the hills neighborhood. The paving stones of this small square and the lanes of Seillans are classified! They cannot thus be changed place, even if the geological problems (the rock on which the village is built weakens during time) make their balance increasingly precarious.

The street of Butchery

With the Middle Ages the street was divided into two and the upper part named Rue of Tripoux. There the second rampart closed by a Poterne was held. The butchers were a rich corporation of trade, just like the notaries and the glassmakers). To become to stop, it was necessary to buy its load at the town council for one year and to be committed maintaining the meat at the same price. The butchers of Seillans knew their golden age at the 15th century by selling leather to the tanners of Grasse.

The Notre Dame vault of the Young elm

This vault is with two kilometers of Seillans. Registered with the inventory of the historic buildings, its retable carved of 16th is one of most beautiful crowned works of Provence. Notre Dame of the Young elm appears in a clump of trees where the cypresses prevail, and in a bosky bower.
