History

The first traces of the village would go back to 54 av. J. - C. after the invasion of the Roman army. A legion would have built a camp, in the south of the current village, but also of many rectilinear roads, most important being the Via Agrippa, which passed to Héry and Baudières, it still remains of these ways only one small stone bridge in good state with Venouse. It is a rich person Roman family, Selleni, which would have given its name to the village: Sellenius

The tradition wants that in thanksgiving of its victory over the invaders Sarrasins, gained in Seignelay about the year 727, holy Erbon, Archevêque of Sens, made set up a Chapelle in the place of a Roman tower where were raised, as a sign of triumph, the signs removed with the enemy: from there, in French the name of Signelet, Latin " Signum Laetum" , i.e. merry sign; but this charming etymology is false, and probably comes from the Latin name Silanius or Sellenius.

Cité in 874, " Sigliniacus" becomes Signelay in 1650 and it is, at the time of Colbert, that Seignelay took its current form. As of the XIIIe century, existed a Château in Seignelay; in 1378, this ground was acquired by Philippe de Savoisy, favorite of Charles V. Charles de Savoisy, baron de Seignelay, made build in 1410 a splendid castle, in the honor of Jesus-Christ and of the twelve Apostles, that is to say thirteen turns. In 1657, Colbert bought the baronnie of Seignelay, made modernize the castle, created a baillage, installed two royal manufactures, built market S, a public furnace, a press, an attic with salt, a hotel trade. The king set up Seignelay in Marquisat in 1668, but Colbert did not dare to carry the title and it is his/her oldest son, Secretary of State to the Navy, which one indicated under the name of Jean-Baptiste Colbert, marquis de Seignelay. Seigniory and castle passed by marriage in 1724 to the Montmorency-Luxembourg; sold in year VI, the castle was demolished and its materials used for the construction of the Manoir close to Guillebaudon and the macadamization of the Route S
