Seguiriya

The Seguiriya or Siguiriya is a “palo” (style of song) of flamenco. It belongs to the basic songs regoupés under the term of “lays jondo”. It is a free song of which the rhythmic structure is twelve times, which in its traditional form, are sung accompanied by a guitarist, but one knows versions has cappella in his primitive form. It derives from the song has palo seco (voice alone), and is related with the livianas and serranas , but does not have a relationship with the Séguédille which is a Andalusian dance, whereas the seguiriya is not danced.

The style of the seguiriyas varies according to the areas of Andalusia. Those of Triana are oldest. The topics of these songs are often tragic.

Origin

One allots the invention of this style to the cantaor gipsy of the beginning of the XIXe century, El Planeta, his disciple El Fillo was one of the most representative singer, it created several Seguiriyas which will become the traditional ones lays flamenco.

Repertories

The repertories of the seguiriya are distributed according to their appearances in the territory of lays jondo, which includes/understands the provinces of Seville and Cadiz. The seguiriyas of Triana are oldest, follow those of Los Puertos, Cadiz, and Jerez. These repertories develop starting from the end of the XVIIIeme century until the years 1940.
