Segodunum (Segobum) Postea Rutheni

Segodunum the capital of Rutènes was a strategic crossroads in the Aquitania province preceded or Aquitaine. Placed on a Oppidum of quality this city and its people in the Ruth root, Ru, =>Rot, Roux=>Ruthèni, Rhodos, Grind Rodez (capital of the Rouergue). The name of its people remained a long time related to its identity first and of the area, before taking for name of department the name of its river Avarionis => Aveyron.

Its presence on the Table of Peutinger could only be obvious.

Situation

  • the territory of the Rutènes Divided in North like natural border with the Arvernes and the Gabales, the Aubrac the valley of the Lot or Olt (named Oltis, Olindus or Divona flumen by the cartographers of the 17th century).
  • In the south the Narbonnese , expensive in Romains.

  • In the west Cadurcii, territory of stirring up the Cadurques Lucterios and the Nitiobriges more in south-west.

toponymy: The root sego (related to the metallurgy, with the iron mines, from where the idea of force, power) is at the origin of Segodunum (name Gaulois of Rodez)

Close stages

One can see on the old charts that one there came from north east by Anderitum, via Adsilanum… That one passed there while going up Narbonnese by Condatomago, Millau, Graufesenque… To join the West by a single road via Carantomago.
