Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (September 18th 1900 - December 15th 1985) was old a Prime Minister of Maurice. He is regarded as the “father of the Indépendance” Mauritian.
Ramgoolam leaves to follow studies of medicine to London in 1921, it meets other Indians there: Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and the writer Rabindranath Tagore. It returns to Maurice in 1935.
Ramgoolam is Prime Minister for the September 26th 1961 with the June 16th 1982. Its party is called Parti Independence and it is under its mandate that the country reaches the independence of the the United Kingdom in 1968. Its party is famous shortly after Workers party Mauritian . Ramgoolam is anobli by the queen Elizabeth II in June 1965.
On Friday, May 18, 1979, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam specified, with Holy-Cross, about Jacques-Desired Laval, Apôtre of Mauritius: “Laval Father does not belong at a community nor with only one religion: he was unanimously accepted by all the Mauritians as being large in love with humanity. We benefit today from all that it did, by its work and its faith, for the unit of the people Mauritian. ”
He is named Governor-general of Maurice by the Elizabeth II queen of the December 28th 1983 with his death on December 15th, 1985.
His/her son Navin Ramgoolam is current the Prime Minister of Maurice.
The international airport of Maurice bears his name (its code IATA is MRU).
It is often called SR, especially in the press.
It is reproached to him for having accepted, to obtain the independence of Maurice, to have yielded the Archipel of Chagos to the British for the installation of a Anglo-American base on Diego Garcia, principal island of the archipelago (where stationnenent famous B52 which can carry nuclear bombs). Mauritius since 1980 claims the return of the archipelago under its sovereignty.
