Therapeutic use

Although the sedatives do not relieve directly the Douleur, the Médecin S and the Infirmier S frequently manage some with their patients to calm the anxiety caused by painful acts or procedures or anxiogenes. When a dependant user decrease or ceases his consumption suddenly, it will show symptoms of weaning which go from agitation, insomnia and the anxiety with the convulsions and death. The dependence, psychological like physics, can be treated.

Diverted and entertaining uses

All the sedatives can be used wrongly, but the barbiturates are responsible for the greatest number of problems, because of a share of the “on-regulation” of the doctors and in addition of its nonmedical or “entertaining” use very widespread. The people who have difficulties in manage the stress, the anxiety or the lack of sleep are particularly likely to misuse and become dependant on sedatives. The héroïnomanes take some sometimes in conjunction with their drug or to replace it temporarily. The users of Stimulant S use them to calm an excessive agitation. Others make an entertaining use of it to release and forget their concern.

The overdose with barbiturates is a factor in nearly a third of the deaths charged to drugs, including the Suicide and accidental poisoning with the Médicament S (of accidental deaths take place sometimes when a person prone to a confusion due to a sedative takes several times her amount of drug).

With the the United States, in 1998, a total of 70  982 calls relating to the ingestion of sedatives were recorded by the poisons centres. 2  310 of them (either 3,2%) proved to be major toxic problems and 89 (or 0,1%) led to death. Always with the the United States, about half of the allowed people to the urgencies following a nonmedical use of sedatives had a medical regulation for the product, but had used it with excessive amount or had consumed it with alcohol or other drugs. Others obtain sedatives of their friends who have a legal ordinance or on false ordinance.
