SecuROM is a protective system against the copy of the CD/DVD. It is developed by Sony DADC and is generally used for video games PC. The purpose of SecuROM is to resist the professional and personal peripherals of copy, like with the attempts at Retro-engineering.
The last versions (v4 and more) prevent the cloning (copy 1:1) of CD-R. Certain programs can however circumvent this protection (but cannot copy it).
The use of SecuROM is discussed enough, in particular because it installs an extension automatically preventing the exploring file of Windows from erasing the achievable 16-bits (majority being achievable 32 or 64 bits).
