The National university of Cachan (also called ENS Cachan or Normal Sup' Cachan) is a French University , belonging to the network of the National universities.

History

In 1891, the first normal sections are born. The purpose of they are attached to various universities and are to train the Masters of technical education. In 1912, a decree of October 26th gathers in Paris the four normal sections (Châlons-on-Marnes, Paris, Lyon and Le Havre) under the name of Teacher training school of technical education. This new school settles in the buildings of the 3Ecole Nationale Sup3erieure of arts and trades. Twenty years later, it takes the name of National university of technical education (ENSET) with the creation of the sections of Art, Letters and Languages in addition to the technical fields. In 1956, the ENSET is installed on the campus of Cachan in the south of Paris which it does not leave any more. In 1960, a decree of November 21st stipulates that the ENSET prepares with aggregation; the duration of the schooling passes to four years. The literature sections are moved with ENS of Fontenay-Saint-Cloud in 1976, whereas are founded formations in pure sciences (Mathématiques, Physique, Chimie, Biochimie), in social sciences and of management. In 1985, the ENS of Cachan replaces the ENSET and acquires a statute identical to the others National universities. In 1987, a decree of August 26th redefines the statute of the School by confirming its vocation to train teacher-researchers in the scientific and technological disciplines. In 1992, a decree of April 3rd entitles the ENS to deliver Doctorat S and DEA. The Antenne of Brittany of the National university of Cachan is created in 1994.

To date, the ENS of Cachan is most important of the ENS in term of manpower - 1.300 pupils. It covers a vast spectrum of disciplines.

In March 2005, a merger plan between the ENS of Paris and Cachan is made public by the directions of these two schools; it causes a polemic, initially within the ENS, then, at the time of the renewal campaign of the directions, in the national press. The partisans of fusion propose the need for increasing the international visibility of the establishments and for carrying out economies of scale. Certain detractors show the direction to want to transform the ENS into a “super-university” without taking account of its specificities; others put forward the insurmountable practical difficulties or the reduction on behalf of Humanities.

In January 2007, the ENS of Cachan decides to take part in a Pole of research and higher education (NEAR), of academic nature, created in the South of the Ile-de-France: UniverSud Paris, with for long-term objective the construction of a large university with reinforced international visibility. This CLOSE brings together approximately 50.000 students right now, 155 research laboratories including 130 associated at research organizations, in particular CNRS and INSERM. The founding members of UniverSud Paris are universities Paris-South 11, Versailles Saint-Quentin in Yvelines (UVSQ), and the ENS of Cachan. The most famous universities of the southern territory francilien require to be associated with UniverSud Paris (HEC, Polytechnique, GI Agrotech, École central of Paris, Supélec, SupOptique).

Teaching-formation

Centered on the training of the teachers and the researchers, the ENS of Cachan is a reference since one speaks about professionalisation of higher education. It is the only one of the four French National universities to exert its missions at the same time in the technological, scientific disciplines and of management. By the quality of its laboratories, the ENS of Cachan constitutes a pole of excellence largely open on the scientific and economic environment. She affirms her specificity in the concept of “science practices”, namely the mobilization of the disciplines in the action, the organization, the continuation of concrete applications and the preoccupation with an innovation.

The formation is organized within the framework of 21 masters functioning by conventions with the universities Parisian and Breton partners. Each year, more than 300 aggregate are formed in 21 preparations with an aggregation or an option of aggregation. The School counts 650 researchers and doctorands evolving/moving within 12 laboratories and research centres. It is entitled to deliver the diploma of doctor; more than 200 doctorands, normaliens or students, French and foreigners, takes an active part in the life and the scientific radiation of its research. The transfer of competence scientists exits of research in industrial environments and economic is a characteristic of the ENS of Cachan.

University course

The course commonly includes/understands the preparation of the license, then, in two years, of the master and/or a preparation with the aggregation during the 48 months remunerated of schooling to the ENS of Cachan. The courses are generally of a level quite higher than those of a traditional university course though the delivered diplomas are of comparable nature. The continuation of the studies by a doctoral thesis is strongly encouraged.

; Footbridge of the ENS of Cachan with Sciences Po Paris: An agreement was reached in January 2006, between the IEP of Paris (Sciences Po) and the ENS of Cachan, on the basis of which the pupils normaliens candidates for an admission with Sciences Po are partly exempted examination entrance in 4th year of the diploma of Sciences Po - correspondent to a professional master - but must pass an oral test for the phase of admission.

Preparatory class

CPGE, known as “prépa ENS-Cachan”, is composed of two ways: This type of preparatory class leads the students to follow part of the course to the university, within the framework of the license - 1st and 2nd years of license, respectively shortened in L1 and L2, and corresponding to old DEUG - in right for the D1 way, and in economic scenes or mathematics and applications in social sciences (FARMHOUSE) for the D2 way. It naturally ensures the preparation the entrance examination to the National university of Cachan, and also to the contests of admission to INT Management, ENSAE, ENSAI, and more generally at the business schools accessible by the way from the parallel admissions starting from a L2 level. Admissibility with the ENS of Cachan is equivalent in fact to an admissibility with the one of the business schools " parisiennes" (ESCP-EAP, HEC, ESSEC)

Recruitment

The pupils normaliens are recruited at the conclusion of extremely selective contests, generally passed at the end of the Preparatory classes at the universities. They acquire the statute of probationer and are committed working with the service of the State for one ten years minimum duration starting from the entry at the School.

The contests are generally organized within the framework of banks of tests common to the four ENS. In particular, contest PSI is organized by the ENS of Cachan within the framework of a bank of common tests with the X.

Seek

The ENS of Cachan, following the example others National universities, weaves many bonds with research. Not less than 12 laboratories related to CNRS are present within the School and cover the whole of the taught disciplines. The ENS of Cachan thus accommodates a big number of researchers, also teaching of the School, and doctorands, normaliens or not.
