Poland

The Traité of Versailles had cut the access to the Eastern Prussia by the Germans following the creation of the Corridor of Dantzig and to the territorial concessions conceded with the Poles.

Adolf Hitler put the reconquest of these territories top of the list of its territorial ambitions.

For this offensive, the Germany has 5 armies (the 8th army (Blackowitz), the 10th army (Reichenau) and the 14th army (List) composing the Groupe of Southern armies of Rundstedt and the 3rd army (Kuechler) and the 4th army (Kluge) composing the Northern Groupe of armies of Bock), that is to say 1  500  000 men.

The Poland mobilized 1  of it; 000  000 since July.

Under pretext of border incidents, Germany attacks at the beginning of the morning of the September 1st with some 2  000 modern armoured tanks (of which the XIXe armor-plated body of Guderian). The Poles not laying out of armoured tanks of sufficient number, cannot resist.

Poland nevertheless succeeds in cutting down nearly 500 German planes.

The Germans destroy the major part of the Polish fleet dice the first day.

The Polish forces concentrated at the Western borders in order to preserve the industrial area which is there, are inserted and encircled by the German forces. The plan of Polish defense Plane Zachód, was directed towards the protection of the Western border following the promises of French and the British whose armies were to come to the assistance to the Poles. This plan contributed to a fast defeat, the forces were dispersed.

The borders are entirely crossed the September 5th . This same day, the French troops begin a minor offensive towards Saarbrucken to try to relieve Poland by a diversion in the west.

The September 7th , the 10th army German is to 60 km in the south of Warsaw, 8th and 14th seize the industrial Silesia, 4th and 3rd do not progress quickly since north, the latter is not any more but to 40 km of Warsaw.

The Poles are taken out of clipper and are gathered in two pockets of resistance around Warsaw and of Kutno.

The September 17th , a Polish offensive in the west of Warsaw is crushed, only two divisions escape (100  000 prisoners).

The September 17th , approximately 500  000 soldiers of the Red Army , the armies of Bielorussia and Ukraine - in agreement with of the secret clauses of the Pact Molotov-Ribbentrop - attack Poland. They did not meet a great resistance of the army already destroyed by the Wehrmacht. The Soviet troops, respecting the treaty with the Germans, stop on the Ligne Curzon and a common military parade takes place with Brest-Litovsk, the September 23rd .

Warsaw capitulates the September 27th .

The September 29th , Poland is " partagée" between the Germans and the Soviets according to a line of demarcation agreed upon in advance.

The Germans make 694  000 prisoners. The Soviets stop 240  000 Polish soldiers. 100  000 Poles succeed in fleeing. The Germans count 13  000 killed and 30  000 wounded against 70  000, respectively 133  000, on the Polish side.

The Polish countryside is the first example of Blitzkrieg carried out by the German army.

The funny one of war

The September 6th , Attacks tactical of the French in the south of Pirmasens to secure a good position vis-a-vis the Ligne Siegfried. This attack shows a success the September 13rd , German resistance was quasi-non-existent.

These event mark the beginning of what one calls the Drôle war .
