Second world war

The Second world war is a armed conflict with the planetary scales which lasted of September 1939 to September 1945. Caused by the unsatisfactory payment of the Great War of 1914 - 1918 and by the expansionist and hegemonic ambitions of the three States of the Axis (Nazi Germany, fascistic Italy and Empire of Japan), it consisted of convergence, starting from September 3rd, 1939, of a whole of respectively started regional conflicts the July 18th 1936 in Spain (the Guerre of Spain), the July 7th 1937 in China (the Sino-Japanese war), and on September 1st 1939 in Poland (countryside of Poland). The planetary conflict thus generated opposed two camps schematically - the Alliés and the Axis. It ended in Europe on May 8th, 1945 by the unconditional surrender of the III {{E}} Reich, then was completed in Asia and in the world on September 2nd, 1945 by the unconditional surrender of Japan, last State of the Axis to know the defeat.
The Second world war promotes the the United States and the the USSR, principal winners, like both Superpuissance S called to dominate the world for nearly 40 years. It accelerates the depression of Europe and the process of Décolonisation in Asia, in the Arab Monde then in Africa, completed at the beginning of the Années 1960. Paradoxically, the Second world war is the last serious conflict in Europe, from now on in the search of its unification, and the difficult rebuilding is quickly followed from one boom without precedent.
Not opposing only nations, the Second world war was the first ideological Great War of the history, which explains why the forces of Collaboration in Europe and occupied Asia could be interdependent of country invaders or enemies, or that a resistance could exist until in full heart of the Nazi Germany in war.
The Second world war constitutes the vastest armed conflict that the Humanité knew, mobilizing more than 100 million combatants of 61 nations, deploying the hostilities on some 22 million km ² , and killing approximately 62 million people, of which a majority of civilians. All-out war, it largely retracted the distinction between civilians and soldiers and saw the complete mobilization of the economic, human resources and scientists of the two camps, including the vassal ones of the Axis, put out of regulated cut.
The sum of the property damages forever been able to be quantified in a sure way, but it is certain that it exceeds the cumulated destruction of the whole of the conflicts known by mankind since its appearance. The moral traumatism was not less considerable, the war having moved back the limits of civilization and violence in new proportions. It was also the theater of multiples War crimes, whose Axis never had the monopoly.
Among these crimes appear the Déportation in concentration camps and camps of work at ends of extermination of whole populations (Juif S, Slaves, Tzigane S), or categories particular individuals (homosexual, Témoins of Jéhovah, Handicap be, etc) ordered by the mode Nazi. The mode Shōwa was by no means remains about it in Asia with, with its credit, 10 million enlisted Chinese civilians of force by the Kôa-in with the Manzhouguo, approximately: 200000 “Women of comfort” enlisted in Korea and in all the the Far East, as well as systematic annihilation civil populations, mainly in China and in particular at the time of the Massacre of Nankin.
It is necessary to add the Meurtre S systematic of communist partisans and resistant, as well as the reprisals against the civilians, by the Nazis; experiments on human beings to which doctors Nazis delivered themselves the such S Josef Mengele and the Japanese unit 731; the air raids massive of civilians initially by the Axis in Europe (Coventry in England, Rotterdam in the Netherlands) and in Asia (Shanghai, Chongqing: the most bombarded city war), then by the Allies with Napalm: Tōkyō in Japan, Dresden (: 35000 dead) and Hamburg in Germany. And, for the first and single time in addition to sixty years, the atomic bomb was used against a country: two bombes With released by the the United States have exploded at three days of interval, with Hiroshima and Nagasaki with the Japan.

Origins of the conflict in Europe
The treaties of Versailles, of German Saint, of Trianon and of Neuilly had caused rancours and frustrations and desires of reconquest among people German, Austrian, Hungarian and Bulgarian.
The crisis of 1929 leads the various States to adopt protectionist measures and to place in position of competition the ones compared to the others. Whereas the aggressiveness of the democracies is on the economic plan, the fascistic dictatorships will adopt strict a Autarcie and, naturally, will think their defense and their expansion in military terms. But everywhere, the policies of armament are installation effectively to leave economic stagnation.
These explanations could have been used to explain a war in a context where the policy of Germany would have been inspired by the traditional dominant classes. The war in Europe east however directly resulting from the expansionist of the Nazi party, with the capacity in Germany, and expressed ambitions dice 1924 by Adolf Hitler in Mein Kampf . With these ambitions aiming at reconstituting a vital Espace for the Germanic people was grafted expansionist inclinations of the fascistic mode Italian which after a fashion tried to constitute a colonial empire in Ethiopia and in Europe of the South.
Origins of the conflict in Asia
detailed Articles: Expansionism of Japan Shōwa, Era ShōwaUlcerated by the treatment granted to their nation by the western powers at the time of the Treated of Versailles of many politicians and Japanese soldiers, like Fumimaro Konoe and Sadao Araki reactualize the doctrines of the hakko ichi' U (8 corners of the world under only one roof) and set up an ideology based on the supremacy of the Japanese race and its right to dominate Asia. This racist ideology presents Japan as the center of the world and takes sitted on the imperial institution and the emperor, being divine and going down from the goddess Amaterasu Omikami. She gives place to an attempt at restoration shôwa.
Carried by the influence of the military factions, Japan invades Mandchourie in 1931 thus then the remainder of China in 1937 (Sino-Japanese Guerre (1937-1945). The refusal of Japan to withdraw itself from Indo-China, invaded in 1941, and of China, other than the Manchukuo, leads to the summer of the same year to the imposition by the United States of an embargo on oil. In reaction, Hirohito lance then the war of Large Eastern Asia (Dai Tô-A sensô) and authorizes the attack of Pearl Harbor and the invasion of the Southeast Asia.
Belligerents

It is of use to call the signatories of tripartite alliance “Forces of the Axis” and their “Allied” adversaries. It is not inevitably possible to classify without ambiguity a belligerent country in one or the other camp, because alliances changed throughout the conflict.
Members of the Axis
Walk with the war in Europe was rythmée regularly by the German initiatives. According to the words of Yves Durand: The responsibility for the release of the Second world war falls undoubtedly on the Germany hitlérienne . When Germany invades Poland, the Japan is already in war against China since 1937 and even 1931, but, in spite of the pact anti-Comintern signed by Germany and Japan in 1936, the relations between the two countries remain distant, and Germany does not support Japan against China. In addition, until 1941, none of the two belligerents of the Sino-Japanese war dares to formally declare the war with the other, the first to be made it being likely to be indicated like attacker and to lose the possibility of buying weapons abroad. It is not that after the Japanese attack on Pearl-Harbor that Jiang Jeshi can officially declare the war with the Japanese invader and his partners of the Axis, on December 8th, 1941.Japan, enlized in a war envisaged at the beginning for three months, is confronted with the difficulty in occupying a too vast territory and devoted itself to many exactions against the civil populations (Massacre of Nankin), in addition to resorting on several occasions to the chemical weapons.
September 27th, 1940 takes place in Berlin the signature of the tripartite pact by which Japan recognizes the prevalence of Germany and Italy in Europe and these the last two States, the supremacy of Japan in Asia. The three countries sign a pact of mutual assistance. As for Italy, theoretically allied of Germany since 1936, she declared the war in France and Great Britain only on June 10th, 1940, and attacks Greece without consulting the Germans on October 28th, 1940.
The alliance of Hungary with Germany as from 1938 is worth to him to carry out territorial enlargings at the expense of Czechoslovakia and Romania. However, when it adheres to the pact in November 1940, it is not yet belligerent. It is only on June 27th, 1941 that the Hungarian armies engage at the sides of Wehrmacht, against the USSR.
When the Romania adheres to the pact in November 1940, the German troops are already present on its territory. A few months later, Romania engages in a very given way at the sides of Germany during the invasion of the USSR in June 1941. The Rumanian army consequently does not hesitate to take part not only in military operations, but also in the exactions Nazis in the USSR: massive extermination of the Jews in Transistrie, or the civil population of Odessa.
Hungary and Romania sent to several hundreds of thousands men to fight at the sides of Germany in the USSR. The quotas of foreign volunteers engaged on the Russian in the name of the anti-Bolchevism, like division '' Azul '', Spanish face or the Légion of the French volunteers have manpower much more modest.
The Regent of Yugoslavia sign an alliance with Germany in March 1941. It follows at once a military coup d'etat antiallemand: when the new king imposed by the putsch denounces alliance, Germany and Italy invade and dismantle Yugoslavia. The State independent of Croatia becomes a satellite of the Nazi Germany. Another satellite of Germany, the Slovakia, which adhered to the tripartite pact in November 1940, declares the war in the USSR on June 23rd, 1941.
The Bulgaria becomes officially member of the tripartite pact on March 1st, 1941 and lets the Wehrmacht cross its territory to invade Greece. Bulgaria benefits from its alliance to carry out some territorial enlargings. It does not take part in the invasion of the USSR, but must declare the war in England and the United States at the end of 1941. It is in war against the USSR only during twenty-four hours, the 5-6 September 1944.
After attackbeing attacked by the USSR in November 1939 with the passive complicity of Germany, the Finland approaches Reich and declares the war in the USSR the 26 June 1941. However, the marshal Mannerheim explicitly limits his objectives with the resumption of the grounds torn off by the Soviets two years earlier.
While destroying part of the fleet of the United States with Pearl-Harbor on December 7th, 1941 and while invading Malaysia, British possession, Japan enters resolutely the war against the United States and Great Britain.
Japan and the USSR as for them clashed in 1939 (Bataille of Halhin Gol), but the hostilities will not reopen before August 8th, 1945. December 21st, 1941, the Thailand sign a defensive pact with Japan and declares the war in the United States and the United Kingdom. The change of government of July 1944 will mean in fact the abandonment of alliance with Japan.
September 8th, 1943, Badoglio, which replaced Mussolini, breaks alliance with Germany by signing an armistice with the Alliés. Hitler invades at once the peninsula which it occupies to Naples. In October, Italy declares the war with its former partner.
Starting from the end 1943, Hungary considers a reversal of alliance. Informed of these preparations, Hitler orders the occupation of Hungary on March 19th, 1944. Invaded by the Red Army, Romania breaks alliance with Germany on August 23rd, 1944. In the night of the 8 to the 9 September 1944, Bulgaria changes camp and declares the war in Germany. Finland signs an armistice with the USSR in September 1944 and turns over the weapons against Germany in December 1944.
Adversaries of the Axis
As the Tchécoslovaque army had not opposed resistance during the invasion of Bohemia-Moravie, the 15 March 1939, one can consider that the Poland is the first belligerent adversary of Germany starting from the 1st September 1939 when it resists its invasion by Germany. The invasion of Poland causes the declarations of war of the Great Britain and of the France on September 3rd, 1939, respectively with 13:00 and 17:00 With Great Britain, the Australia and the New Zealand also declare the war in Germany. With the wire of the war, all the dominions (Canada, South Africa, Newfoundland) and all the colonies (India, Nigeria, Kenya, etc) of the British Empire become early or late recipient of the conflict, except Ireland of the South, which remains officially neutral under the direction of Éamon de Valera. In April 1940, when Germany invades Denmark and Norway, Norway opposes an armed resistance whereas Denmark, too weak militarily, tries several attacks without success. When Germany establishes its domination on continental Europe, Great Britain and the British Empire are only found in the camp of the adversaries of Germany, but it lodges a certain number of governments in exile or dissenting governments which put armed forces, in particular Polish, Czech and French, more or less important at the sides of Great Britain. The the Eastern Indies Dutchwomen remain under the control of the Dutch government in exile in London.
After the Attack on Pearl Harbor, the 7 December 1941, the the United States enter in war against Japan, Germany and Italy. The Republic of China, adversary of Japan is found in the camp of the allied powers. Many countries of Latin America will declare the war in Germany: The Brazil in January 1942 and the Mexico in May 1942
After the American unloading in North Africa, in November 1942, the major part of colonial Empire French finds side of the Allies.
In 1945, the Allies inform all the States that those which will have declared the war in Germany will be allowed with the conference founder of the United Nations. What involves, in spring 1945, a cascade of new declarations of war in IIIe Reich, which for the majority will remain extremely platonic: they are South American countries such as Paraguay, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, or of States of the world arabo-Moslem such as Egypt, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, etc on May 8th, 1945, with the German capitulation, the last diplomatic delegations Nazis are expelled of the last neutral States: Switzerland, Ireland of the South, Spain, Portugal, Afghanistan and Chile. In all, 52 States were in state of war with Germany hitlérienne, at which no peace treaty after 1945 never came to put officially fine.
The USSR
When the USSR attacks Poland on September 17th, 1939 in accordance with the secret protocol of the pact germano-Soviet, it is, from a Polish point of view, in the same camp as Germany, without to be in state of war declared with France and Great Britain. When the USSR attacks the Finland in November 1939, Finland is rather side of France and England. This aggression is in addition worth in the USSR to be seen expelled of SDN at the end of 1939. Throughout pact, Stalin delivers punctually and to credit oil, raw materials and cereals allowing Reich to circumvent the blockade of the allies. He delivers also several tens to him of German Communists taken refuge in Moscow.Starting from the 22 June 1941, the USSR, attacked by Germany, finds itself in the camp of the Allies. It profits from the American lease-lend. In the absence of being able to open before 1944 the second face urgently claimed by Moscow, the Allies provide to the USSR an important help, which forwards in particular by the dangerous Arctic way - convoy PQ-18 being thus almost decimated.
According to Raymond Cartier and John Keegan, between October 1941 and June 1942, the Americans deliver 1.285 planes, 2.249 tanks, 81.287 machine-guns, 56.500 telephones of countryside, 380.000 miles of telephone wire. In 1943,427 000 of the 665.000 trucks of the Red Army come from in addition to-Pacific. America provides also 13 million boots, 5 million tons of vivres, or 2.000 engines, 11.000 coaches, 54.000 tons of rail. ¾ of Russian copper comes from the USA, but also most of the oil of high content without which the fuel for plane is not feasible.
The German defeat is unthinkable without the Red Army, which fixes in June 1944 two thirds of Wehrmacht (in general the youngest troops and best equipped) and puts out of combat 85% of its soldiers, even if this one could most probably not have held without the Anglo-Saxon assistance.

Successes of the Forces of the Axis (1939-1942)
The majority of the historians, locates the beginning of the Second world war on September 3rd, 1939, when after the invasion of Poland by Germany, France and the United Kingdom declare the war with the Germany under the terms of a treaty the binder Poland since February 1921. Largely outclassed, the Polish army is crushed before the end of September by Germany and the USSR; nothing any more occurs on the western face where last the thin demonstration of Gamelin in the the German Saar (6-13 September 1939), the Franco-British troops (under French command) do not take any military, null initiative offensive not intervening during several months.

In spring 1940, the allies prepare to cut the supply iron of Germany, which forwards Sweden towards Reich by Norway, but the operation turns to the fiasco, it is the incidental of Narvik and Germany invades the Denmark and the Norway on April 9th, 1940. A majority of the task force of the United Kingdom and France must the very same day re-embark precipitately, which involves the fall of Chamberlain and its replacement by Churchill on May 10th, 1940, where the Belgium is invaded. May 27th, the French of Béthouard seize Narvik well, but must give up it later a few days because in France even, the German victory then is practically acquired.

Indeed, in May - June 1940, the German army concludes the striking down invasion of the Netherlands, of the Luxembourg, the Belgium and the France. One speaks about “Blitzkrieg”, i.e. of “lightning war”. The king of the Belgians Léopold III makes capitulate his army on May 28th, 1940. Great Britain is forced to evacuate its encircled troops with Dunkirk, succeeding in from May 27th to June 3rd saving 300.000 soldiers during more immense operation of re-embarkation of the military history. June 5th, Hitler takes again the offensive in France and borer the lines of defense of new the généralissime Weygand on the Sum and Aisne. Italy joint then in Germany and declares the war in France on June 10th. Then, in France, the new government Pétain request the Armistice the 17 and accepts the conditions, the 22 of them. After the Franco-Italian armistice which follows the 24, the engagements cease on June 25th. With the general surprise, the French Army, famous since 1918 best of the world, crumbled in a few weeks.

Against waiting of the strategists Nazis and beaten French generals, the United Kingdom makes face with German aviation successfully because, in spite of the weakness of its Army, it has a powerful fleet, returned without rival by the neutralization of the French fleet (with closed armistice and the destruction of Mers El Kebir) and of a well organized aviation. Moreover, the Prime Minister Churchill who replaced Chamberlain, manages to galvanize the country. Subjected initially to air raids on strategic targets, Great Britain faces of September 1940 in May 1941 with terrorist bombardments on its metropolises: this " Blitz " who destroys in particular the City of London or the town of Coventry manages neither to start the British resolution, nor to compensate for the losses of the Luftwaffe of Göring, overcome by the pilots the Royal Air Force.

Eager to avenge the affront made by France with the kingdom for Siam in 1893 and 1904, Thailand benefits from the invasion of this one by Germany and launches out in January 1941 in a series of attacks against the French Indo-China, starting the Guerre free-inhabitant of Thailand. No camp not being able to impose itself, the litigation is sliced by Japan, present at the north of Indo-China since September 1940 and which grants Thailand part of Laos and Kampuchea.
To hold only vis-a-vis Hitler, the United Kingdom has the initially economic assistance of the the United States, since those, although officially neutrals, supply it out of weapons and supply. Roosevelt obtains Congress in March 1941, the vote of the law “'' Prêt-Bail ''”, which enables him to bring a material aid unlimited to the United Kingdom and its allies.
Hitler, despairing to take the United Kingdom and to lead it to make peace, sets up a powerful chain of fortifications, called “Atlantic Wall”, on the coasts of the Atlantic and the English Channel, and decides to attack the USSR. But fascistic Italy itself has just attacked, starting from the Albania, the Greece which she believed without defense. However in fact the Greek forces of the nationalist dictator Metaxás are victorious: after having contained the attack of the troops of Mussolini, the Greek army and a task force British, Australian, New Zealand, Indian and South-African pushes back them and invades in its turn the Italian Albania.

At this point in time, to lend strong hand to the Italians, Hitler pushes back several weeks its operation against the USSR, and sends in April 1941 its troops towards Greece, through Hungary sympathizer and after having invaded with the passage the Yugoslavia. The Nazis beat the armies Yugoslavian and Greek, which enables them to occupy all the south of the Europe. But, at the same time, they have just created an additional face in Yugoslavia, where resistances “tchetniks” of Draža Mihailović and Communists of Tito, were going to immobilize to him from 13 to 20 divisions until the end of the war. Moreover, the invasion of the USSR is differed, from May 15th to June 22nd.

June 22nd, Wehrmacht invades the USSR, it is the operation Barbarossa in which also the Romania takes part. In spite of a striking down advance and captures it several million Soviets, Wehrmacht is stopped in December 1941, to about thirty kilometers of Moscow under a freezing cold and without adequate equipment. It is the second time since the countryside of Russia of 1812, which the Russians are saved by the rigor of their winter, but also by the alarm clock of powerful a Patriotisme which makes some agree much to deliver fatal combat. The Germans remain also blocked in front of Leningrad, deliberately subjected by Hitler to a fatal blockade which will make perish of hunger 700.000 inhabitants in addition to thousand days of seat.

Consequently, the countryside of Russia will mobilize the main part of the German military efforts. In spite of their enormous losses, the Soviets could fold up their industrial potential in the order, more than 10 million workers and thousands of dismounted factories being reinstalled in the east of the Ural. The rehabilitation of the USSR in the allied camp also enables him to receive a strong américano-British help in material of quality and supply. Stalin proclaims also the sacred union and galvanizes energies, while maintaining intact terror against the failing soldiers or the overcome officers. Lastly, the Soviets still have reserves. During the winter 1941, they launch their Siberian troops which oblige the invaders to move back.
In September 1940, the Italian forces had attacked Egypt, under British influence. But as of December, the English, supported by the forces of the Commonwealth, pass to the counter-attack, and the Germans must send what one will call the Afrika Korps in reinforcement to help their Italian allies. In July 1942, Afrika Korps of Rommel is not any more but with a few tens of kilometers of Alexandria

After being itself assured that the the USSR would take part in the dismemberment of the country by signing the Pacte Molotov-Ribbentrop, Hitler launches its armies on Poland, on September 1st 1939, without declaration of war (see: incidental of Gleiwitz). Pursuant to their alliance, France and the United Kingdom declare the war in Germany. In particular, France guaranteed after 1918 by treaties of mutual assistance the existence of the majority of the countries lately created in Central Europe (with the ulterior motive to create a medical cord around Germany as well as Russia Bolshevik). However, in spite of the pressure of Chamberlain, not more than it did not respect its engagements towards the preceding victims of Hitler, France does not respect its obligations towards Poland: those provided that France would attack Germany 15 days after the beginning of the general mobilization. But put aside a short limited offensive in the Saar from September 6th to 13rd, the French remain the weapon with the foot, whereas Poland makes only vis-a-vis the German aggression then Soviet. The Germans then use for the first time the tactics of the “lightning war” ( Blitzkrieg ), which ensures the Wehrmacht a fast victory in spite of the counter-offensive of Bsura. The USSR then takes its share of Poland while waiting, at the summer 1940, the Baltic States and the Moldavie, and attacks Finland to take to him the border region of Karelia, close to Leningrad. The Finns will resist three months, then will end up yielding. After its first victorious countryside, Hitler turns to the west, but nothing occurs on this face during several months. Cut off behind the Line Maginot, the French await the German attack to dam up it. It is the funny of war . But the French strategy of the general Gamelin is taken at fault when on May 10th 1940, Germany launches the operation Fall Gelb , a massive onslaught on the Netherlands, the Belgium and the Luxembourg, violating the neutrality of these States, then through the Ardennes - the Percée of Sedan - in order to take with reverse the Ligne Maginot.
The Franco-British armies are spread towards north to defend Belgium but are taken with reverse, then finally encircled around Dunkirk. Royal Navy and the British pleasure boats evacuate their troops and a broad part of the French forces in Dunkirk (Opération Dynamo) by giving up their heavy equipment, while a curtain of French troops slows down the reduction of the tiny room before being made prisoner. Gamelin is replaced as of on May 19th by the general Maxime Weygand, who does not succeed in setting up a line of defense along the Sum, to the Maginot line. It arrives too late, and its action, which starts by delaying the response with perforated German, cannot prevent the situation from worsening, France not having reserves. After a few days of fierce combats, this line is bored. Consequently, nothing any more can stop the projection Nazi. The president of the Council Paul Reynaud resigns and the new government of the marshal Philippe Pétain chooses to ask for the Armistice on June 17th. It is signed on June 22nd. Germany occupies the northern and western part of its territory. Pétain founds in France a mode Autoritaire and Collaborateur, the Régime of Vichy.
Seeing successes of Germany, Mussolini had also wanted to launch its country in the conquests. It had already occupied the Albania at the beginning of 1939 and on June 10th, 1940, it also attacks France, but progressed only of a few kilometers. However, the government prohibited with the Royal Air Force to counteract. Moreover, at the first hours of the attack, Stalin, in the hope to arrange the things with Hitler, prohibited even with the Soviet forces to cross the border in the event of victorious counter-attack, and initially those do not dare to open fire whereas they are hammered by the German bombs.
However, for the first time, an army does not crumble in front of the Wehrmacht: in spite of its heavy defeats, the Red Army does not cease as of the first day multiplying the counter-attacks, with surprised German officers. The considerable advance of the troops hitlériennes appears at the same time slower than envisaged, the number of divisions and Soviet tanks definitely higher than the estimates of the secret services. The Soviets move their industrial base in the the Ural, always receive the assistance allied by the Arctic ports in their hands, and produce since 1942 more weapons than Germany, while the Red Army opposes a heroic defense which, helped by one testing winter, enables them to defend in particular Moscow and Leningrad.
Stalin in addition knew to awake the Russian Nationalisme and to organize the sacred union vis-a-vis the attacker: it receives the support of the Churches, puts out of night light agrarian collectivism and part of police control on the company, and substitutes the patriotic references to those for Communism, as of its speech of July 3rd, 1941 when it is addressed skilfully to his Soviet “brothers and sisters”. He does not neglect either to maintain a real terror against his officers and his generals, of which much is shot for " incompétence" in the first months of the war, while the million prisoners is officially disavowed and regarded as traitors (and their families with them), and the failing soldiers exposed to the execution or the deportation with the Gulag: with the face, special teams of NKVD even undertake, in 1941 as with Stalingrad, of mitrailler the soldiers who ebb backwards. In spring 1942, the German army takes again the offensive by concentrating this one towards the oil fields of the the Caucasus, in the south. With the end of the year, armed Life, with more: 300000 men, is destroyed with Stalingrad which represents a bolt for the control of the Caucasus. In 1943, the Wehrmacht takes again the initiative with the third Bataille of Kharkov, but is broken with large the Bataille of Koursk.
In 1943, after an unloading in Sicily, then another in the Italian peninsula, the Allies start the countryside of Italy. Mussolini driven out, the country capitulates and lines up side of the Alliés. Nevertheless, Germany can hold a line of defense in the mountains which slows down this progression in the peninsula. It should be awaited at the beginning of 1945 so that the Nazis are completely pushed back of Italy.
The Allies take foot in Normandy with the Opération Overlord starting from June 6th, 1944. The allied soldiers who unload are mainly states-uniens, British and Canadian. Another unloading is organized in August (from the 15), in Provence with the Opération Anvil Dragoon, to release the south of France and to open a second face in France. Germany tries a counter-offensive despaired in the Bataille of the Ardennes in December, where it loses its last military reserves. The last defenders of IIIe Reich will be often civilians, old men and children of the Volksturm, a militia assembled by Martin Bormann.
At the end of March 1945, the Alliés can finally cross the the Rhine and occupy of vast sectors of the west and the south of the Germany, while, to the east, the Soviet S progress continuously, releasing the Central Europe then reaching Berlin. In the streets of Vienna and Berlin attacked by the Red Army, of the squadrons S still make reign terror by hanging in public those which refuse to continue a combat without hopes. Hitler commits suicide the April 30th of a ball in the head in its Bunker of the Chancellerie. The same day, the Soviets plant their flag on the roof of the Palais of the Reichstag, the old seat of the German Parlement, in Berlin in ruins. The Bataille of Berlin continues until the May 2nd. The Germany goes without condition on May 8th, 1945. The Third Reich for which Hitler predicted one one millenium duration will have finally sown the destruction a little more than 12 years.
Theaters African and of the Middle East
The Italian army, on the basis of its colony of Libya, attacks the British troops and of the the Commonwealth in Egypt, but is put in rout until Germany reinforces it. Engagements follow one another then, in the desert of North Africa, between the Italian forces supported by the Afrika-Korps of Erwin Rommel and the 8th British army. In May 1942, Rommel launches a great offensive towards the east to reach Suez, and hustles the British forces, but it is stopped 14 days with Bir Hakeim by the 1 {{Re}} free brigade French of the Koenig general, which gave time to the British in rout to gather on the strengthened line of El Alamein, that Rommel does not manage to cross. Then in October 1942, it is the 8th British Army, ordered by Montgomery, which tackles in its turn the forces of the Axis and gains the Second battle of El Alamein. This one puts an end to the presence of the Axis in Libya, a few days after the success of the unloading combined in North Africa.November 8th, 1942, indeed, to relieve the Soviet Union which only resists the German attack, the American and British forces unload in Morocco and in Algeria, controlled by the Vichy government: it is the Opération Torch. The French troops of Vichy counteract and are opposed to the allies unloaded until an agreement negotiated with the admiral Darlan puts an end to the engagements.
The allies drive out finally the Axis of the African continent, with the assistance of the army of turned over Africa and the free French Forces. From North Africa, the Allies can then organize the unloadings in Sicily and Italy in 1943, and Provence in 1944.

As from 1937 in China, the nationalist army of the Kuomintang under Tchang Kaï-chek and the Marxist Communists under Mao Zedong make common front against the Japan board but generally without cooperating.
Enlisée in China, the imperial armed systematically has recourse, since 1937, with the use of chemical weapons. According to the historians Matsuno and Yoshimi, those were in particular used with 375 recoveries to ensure the invasion of the town of Wuhan the autumn 1938. The use of bacteriological weapons as for him is authorized by the imperial General headquarter as from 1940 but never against Westerners.
Subjected as from 1941 to an embargo on the Oil after its occupation of Indo-China, Japan cannot from now on carry out its any more political expansionist without destroying the principal threat which can be still opposed to him in the Pacific: the naval force from the United States based in Hawaii. Again employing the strategy which succeeded to him against Russia, Japan decides to bombard Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941 by surprise. The fleet is strongly damaged, but the aircraft carriers are at sea.
At the same time, the Japanese army occupies the possessions British, Dutch and American Southeast Asia like HongKong, Singapore (massacre of 10.000 civilians), the Filipino Indonesia and the (walk of Bataan) and seizes the oil fields of Malaysia threatening even the Australia. The French Indo-China already made under its military control with the agreement of the Régime of Vichy on July 21st, 1941. The takeover by force of March 9th, 1945 will complete the Japanese seizure on the peninsula, disputed by the Vietnamese soldier-Minh of Ho Chi Minh.
The Raid of Doolittle in April 1942 marks the beginning of the American response. In May 1942, the battle between aircraft carrier of the sea of Coral turns to the advantage of the allies. One month later, that Ci is accentuated by that of Midway.
In May 1942, the army showa tries to neutralize Chinese communist resistance while launching the operation “kills all, plunders all, burns all” (sankô sakusen) in the north of China.
In spite of the determination of the Japanese army, the Allies take again little by little the Pacific Islands as with Guadalcanal, the Solomon then the Filipino after the Bataille of the gulf of Leyte (October 1944), the latter remaining the greatest air and sea battle ever which has occurred. Subjected to blockade and half-compartment gradually of its raw material supplies, Japan is at the edge of economic asphyxiation at the summer 1945. Engagement in 1944 of the first Kamikaze S of the history - these suicide planes which are thrown on the enemy ships - cannot slow down the American reconquest, but proves the determination of the Japanese.
The capture of the islands close to Japan like Iwo Jima and Okinawa makes it possible to launch direct air raids. in particular sudden Tōkyō a bombardment flamer on March 10th, 1945. Especially, Hiroshima on August 6th and Nagasaki the 9 (it was to be Kokura) undergo a nuclear attack.
Combined with the declaration of war of the the USSR and the invasion of the Mandchoukuo by the Soviet forces, the atomic bombardments cause finally the rendering of Japan, announced by Hirohito the August 15th 1945, confirmed by the signature of the instruments the September 2nd on board the US Missouri.

Weapons

" Mobile warfare on vast spaces, the Second world war was a flamewar " .
The generalized use of the tanks is a first illustration of this tendency to motorization. Whereas the French Army makes the choice of a dispersion of the tanks, put at the service of the units of infantry, the Germans while adopting a tactic based on the use of the grouped tanks leave victorious the Bataille of France. The design of the tank itself oscillates between two tendencies: power and handiness. The experiment of the war of Spain showed that the shielding is less important than the low silhouette, less vulnerable, the mobile turret with 360° and power of the gun. But during the second world war, one witnesses a growth in weight, shielding and firepower. Thus, the German tank Tigre I makes 57 tons. American Sherman M4 and Soviet T34, used until the end of the war remain in the range of the 30 tons. The concentration of tanks in armor-plated divisions make it possible to carry out lightning wars (Blitzkrieg), as the Bataille of France in May - June 1940 gained by my Germans. The Nazi Germany makes the error to invade the USSR by underestimating its real number of tanks, and without knowing that the Soviets have the T34, the best tank of the war. The greatest concentration of tanks took place at the time of the Bataille of Koursk, in Russia, in July 1943.
Progress of tanks goes hand in hand with progress of the anti-tank armament: the use of the Hollow-charge makes it possible to bore increasingly thick shieldings. Tubes rocket launcher as the Bazooka make it possible to the infantryman to have against the tanks of the power an artillerist.
Parallel to the use of tanks, one attends throughout the war with an increase in motorized transport of the troops, the detriment of the horses, still very present as well on the French side as on the German side at the time of the battle of France or on the face of the east. The American armor-plated division of 1944, it, will be entirely motorized.
Immense progress of aviation realized between the two wars will give to the various planes of war a place of first importance. The improvement of the structures of the plane makes it possible the fighter-bombers like the Stuka to operate dive bombings and to thus take all their share in the terrestrial combat. Heavy bombers like the flying fortress American, of which the operating range reached, at the end of the war, 5 000 kilometers are used in massive raids of thousand planes and more, thus implementing the strategic concept of Bombardement. To counter the bombers, the belligerents make use of their fighter plans and gun of anti-aircraft defense (DCA). It is the effectiveness of the DCA which obliges to organize the operations of bombardment the night. One asks the fighter plans to ensure the control of the airspace on a battle field or a given face.
The Germans could perhaps have still reversed the air war thanks to the invention of the first jets by Messerschmitt. But Hitler wastes this chance while requiring to make bombers of them, against the opinion of its officers, and not of the fighter plans, which would have been much more suitable.
The DCA owes its effectiveness with the whole new Radar S which assists it and makes it possible to supervise the sky. As from 1942, the bombers are equipped with radars. Generally, telecommunications form integral part of the military arsenal. The German armoured tanks are connected between them by radio operator dice 1939, whereas their French adversaries are it only very partially. The techniques of figuring and deciphering follow the technological developments. German uses the machine of coding Enigma, but the deciphering of Enigma by the Western allies is a fundamental factor which enables them to reverse the course of the battles of the Atlantic and to ensure their final victory finally.
On sea, before the Second War, one witnessed a ceaseless reinforcement of the shieldings of the battleships, but its superstructures and its means of combat exposed on broad wharves remain very vulnerable to the caused damage, for example, by the dive bombings. The battleship ceases being the king of the naval battles, whereas the aircraft carrier which can embark from 50 to 60 apparatuses, takes an increasingly crucial role, especially when the theater of the operations is far away from the terrestrial base, as it is the case, for the United States or Japan in the battles of the Pacific. The aircraft carrier becomes the central part of a device where the other ships become its auxiliaries.
As at the time of the First World War, the submarines are largely used to block the enemy provisioning, but the anti-submarine Lutte made progress thanks to the Sonar S whose first development date from the First World War but which becomes fully operational.
At the end of the Second War, new weapons make irruption on the battle field, as the pilotless aircraft V1 launched for the first time by the Germans on England in the night of the 13 to the 14 June 1944 or the missile V2 launched for the first time on London the 8 September 1944. Contrary to fears of the allies, the Germans did not have a project of atomic bomb. The Americans, on the contrary, had put starting from December 1941 gigantic resources in the Projet Manhattan which succeeds the 16 July 1945, after the rendering of Germany, at the first nuclear explosion in the desert of the New Mexico and at the atomic Bombardements of Hiroshima and Nagasaki August 6th and 9th 1945.

Europe under domination Nazi
See also: Europe under domination Nazi
Starting from the victory of Germany over France, and more still as from 1941, with the invasion of Balkans and the Soviet Union, and until the end 1944, almost the totality of Europe east under German domination. Certain countries and certain areas straightforwardly were attached to the Grand Reich, like Austria, the Protectorat of Bohemia-Moravie, or the west of Poland. Other countries were combined voluntarily in Germany, it acts of the Bulgaria, the Romania and the Hungary, but they are completely dependant on Germany. Certain countries, Slovakia and of the Croatia which owe their independence in the Nazi Germany. Others are occupied following German victories. It is the case of the Netherlands, of the Belgium, the Norway, the Denmark, the France, the Serbia, the Greece.
Economic domination and control
German domination in Europe revêt a different character in the east and the west. The European Eastern European countries, with the Slavic settlement are regarded by the Nazis as a " space vital" (Lebensraum) returning to the " Race of Seigneurs". In this immense space, it is at the same time a question of establishing German colonists, of germaniser of force the populations which can the being, to move, sterilize or make die million " under-hommes" Polish, of Slavic Soviet and Gypsies by using the survivors like slaves, finally to destroy the Jews. The west is not regarded as a vital space to empty so that Germans can take seat there. In the new European order, a country like France keeps its place, but with a row lower than that of Germany. If the German occupant exerts a less terror, it does not subject of them less the resources of the countries conquered to systematic plundering.
Indeed, on the economic plan, the continent of Europe is subjected to the hegemony of the Reich . For Germany, it is initially a question of putting the whole of the resources and economic capacities of the continent at the service of the Reich in war. In addition, of the stakes are posed for an integration of all the nation's economies in an economic big space dominated by Germany.
In practice, the various means to put the economy of Europe at the service of Germany go from the agreements of compensation with advantageous foreign exchange rate for the combined countries to massive plundering for the countries like Poland or the Soviet Union while passing by the payment of allowances for a country like France. The energization of the prisoners of war and displacements in Germany of million workers represent a form even more direct of the exploitation of the resources.
Collaborations and Resistances
Like notes it Yves Durand, “the occupations generate among the occupied ones, of the behaviors which go from collaboration to resistance while passing by a whole range of attitudes which can be reduced neither with nor with the other”.See also: Collaboration in Europe occupied by the Nazis
All the overcome countries must accept at least a form of minimal collaboration which makes it possible to the people to survive by accepting at least temporarily the conditions of the winner. It is what Werner Rings calls the neutral collaboration which is typically practiced in the Netherlands and in Belgium whose governments left the country but whose administrations do what is necessary to make it possible to the inhabitants to survive and with the economy to turn to the service of the German effort of war. In other countries as Norway of Quisling from 1942 they are the partisans of the Nazis who control the country directly. The historians generally call them “collaborationnists”. It is not the policy of Hitler to put its partisans directly at the capacity in the countries which they conquered. He prefers to support conservative leaders like Pétain in France or Nedić in Serbia which is supposed better to manage their countries. The various governments of France of Vichy propose themselves a collaboration which goes beyond what is envisaged by the armistice of June 1940 while hoping to obtain for France a better place in German Europe. According to the terms of Paxton, " Hitler pushes back the hand tendue". It is him which chooses its allies. In Poland, controlled directly by the Germans to be plundered and completely controlled, there can be neither collaborationnists nor collaborators.
Engagement in “resistance” allows the people dominated to continue to be opposed to the winner, to take part in the effort of war of Alliés and so possibly to the release of their country. Resistance is organized by the creation of movements, networks and maquis, gathering a minority of the population and often in connection with the governments in exile or the English intelligence services Soviet or American.

Genocides, deportations, concentrations
See also: Shoah, Porajmos, Aktion T4
The war and the domination of Europe which is resulted from it made it possible the Nazi regime to push with extreme its racist ideology. According to the terms of Goebbels " the war offers all kinds of possibilities to us that peace refused us "
The very same day of the entry in war, in September 1939, Hitler authorizes the extermination of the German mentally handicapped persons and other incurable patients. Officially stopped in August 1941 thanks to a trend of opinion, the Aktion T4 leads to the " euhthanasie" by gas of more than 150.000 handicapped, many technicians of the operation being then reallocated with the massive gazage of the Jews in the camps of death.
Since 1939, the Jews are concentrated of force in miserable, over-populated and deliberately famished Ghettos, in particular in the General Government of Poland. Their systematic extermination, that one indicates under the name of Shoah, of adord is implemented by executions of mass practiced by the Wehrmacht then by the Einsatzgruppen in the Polish and Soviet territories. In the USSR and in part of Poland, the “Shoah by balls” yields in 1942 the step to the methodical use of trucks to gas . After the Conference of Wannsee (January 20th, 1942), the policy of extermination (“ the Final solution of the Jewish question ” in the terminology Nazi) aims at the Jews of all the occupied countries and takes an industrial turn. The Jews are off-set in death camps in which the victims are gazées masses some, and their reduced bodies of ashes in crematoriums . On the whole, approximately three quarters of the Jews of occupied Europe, adding up, according to Raul Hilerg, at least 5 100 000 people are exterminated.
The Gypsies are also victims of the racial policy of the Nazis. The extermination of the Gypsies is known under the name of Porajmos. In December, Himmler 1942, it makes the decision to off-set towards Auschwitz all the Gypsies of Europe, but it ignores quickly the subject which does not constitute a stake startegic of first importance. one can estimate that during the Second world war, between 50.000 and 80.000 Gypsies died of the continuations of measurements of persecutions Nazis.
In addition to the Death camps whose finality the extermination of the Jews and other qualified categories “submen”, the Nazis multiply the concentration camps and their kommandos to lock up, and to generally exterminate by the forced labor, the opponents real or supposed, or of the common rights. The conditions particularly dehumanizing of detention and the brutal treatments of the S and the Kapo involve an extremely strong mortality there (40% of the French deportees do not survive).

In Asia also, the Japanese empire has recourse to large scales with the plundering of the raw materials and the forced labor of the prisoners of war and the local populations which he claimed to release from the colonial constraint.
Japan creates in the north of China, in 1932 the State of the Manzhouguo, state vassal on the throne of which the emperor Puyi was installed.
They add to it in 1940, with Nankin, the collaborator government of Wang Jingwei, former nationalist leader, claiming to him-also Sun Yat-SEN. To give a patriotic profile, this government puts an end to the mode concessions European with Shanghai.
The Japanese also profited from the support of the government inhabitant of Thailand and certain local nationalists, such Shandra Böse in India, and who are sometimes remained with the capacity after the war, like Ahmed Soekarno in future the Indonesia.
Historical consequences
The Second world war contributes, through its assessment more or less prejudicial with the participants, the emergence of two superpuissances who will share the world: the the United States of America (the USA) and the Union of the Soviet socialist republics (the USSR).The Société of the Nations, to which one charges to have failed to prevent the war, is replaced by the United Nations. The Charte of the United Nations is written with San Francisco in June 1945.
The institutions of pre-war period perdurent only in one minority of European and Asian States. All monarchies of Eastern Europe are swept by the fast construction of the people's democracies. A referendum abolishes the royalty in Italy (June 10th, 1946), it is maintained in Greece only at the price of a civil war, and the " royal Question " , exit directly of the attitude discussed of Léopold III during the war, finds solution in Belgium only in the abdication of the monarch (1951). In Japan, the Americans maintain the emperor Hiro-Hito, however constantly held informed of the crimes committed by its armies, but impose the abolition of the imperial worship which proclaimed it divine gasoline. In France, IIIe République made responsible for the defeat yields the place to a new constitution.
Everywhere, the governments engage in the construction industry of the Welfare State or Welfare state: nationalizations, planning, intervention of the State, laws of social protection are from now on with the day order for about thirty years.
The West Germany and Japan are demilitarized and democratized by the Westerners. The principal dignitaries of the hierarchy Nazi are considered, and the majority condemned, for Crime against humanity (a new concept, that the horrors without precedent of the Nazis obliged to define) or for War crime at the time of a international lawsuit in Nuremberg. The Japanese military chiefs answer their exactions in front of the international court of Tokyo.
The Operation Paperclip, the organization Gehlen and the network Gladio, initialized and supported by the American secret services, OSS then the CIA, avoided lawsuits for war crimes to thousands of ex-persons in charge Nazis and placed them at positions of responsibility at least as important as those which they had during the war. By doing this they had a considerable role in the release and the maintenance of the Cold war like in the introduction and the maintenance of many dictatorships in South America and power station, and elsewhere in the world.
The scientific research and technique, as a whole, profit from a strong impulse, in particular for the control of the atom in the Projet Manhattan and seeks it on the rockets which will allow space programs. The war also saw the first massive use of the Antibiotiques or the Pénicilline invented by the British, or of DDT, useful for the Americans in the marshes of the Pacific.
Consequences in the United Kingdom
The others indeed allied, and if the United Kingdom is excluded, have a minor role or are isolated negotiations who lead to the installation of two zones of influences, according to the agreements of Yalta and of Potsdam. This situation, which carries in it the germs of the Cold war, lasts until in 1989.
The United Kingdom leaves considerably weakened war. This one, indeed, devoted the end of the colonial powers. Thereafter, British Isles undergo an unprecedented crisis, due to the rebuilding and the reorganization of its economy.
Consequences in France
During the Battle of Normandy, the general de Gaulle, accommodated as a liberator by the French, manages to obtain allies the recognition of the full authority of his government, the Provisional government of the French Republic ( GPRF ) (proclaimed the June 3rd with Algiers), on the metropolis. He makes so that France is recognized by the camp combined like a winner. This recognition enables him to occupy part of Germany, or to obtain a seat of permanent member at the Safety advice of UNO.The Libération of France is accompanied by the purification of part of the people suspectées to have collaborated. The Germans and their collaborators multiplied the atrocities under the Occupation, then during their retirement. Also in the territories released by the resistant ones, and in spite of the efforts of the majority of their chiefs and the police chiefs of the Republic to found a legal and legal Purification as fast as possible, many executions expeditious and are not always preceded by judgments. Approximately 20.000 women are mowed for “horizontal collaboration”. So errors are made in this fast release, and of innocent wrongfully assassinated. The historians estimate that approximately 11 000 summary executions take place, with the three quarters during the engagements. Wild purification could be all the more brutal as the population can want to be avenged for the exactions of the militia and the Germans in their rout and that the swelling of manpower of Resistance made it possible unquestionable resistant 24e hour to be thus cleared with few expenses. One observed the same phenomenon at the time of the independence of Algeria. On the other hand, certain collaborators are sometimes discharged or condemned to weak sorrows (in spite of the gravity of their crimes) by the regular courts whose majority of the judges lent oath to Pétain. Others were judged by the High court made up of resistant, but the importance of the judgments decreased with time. Thus in 1949, the last judged defendant is discharged: the Secretary of State inside Pétain, Rene Bousquet (which placed the police force and the gendarmerie Frenchwomen at the disposal of the occupants to make hunting for resistant and to off-set nearly 60.000 Juifs) is discharged. To note that the collaborators were continued only for treason, and not for crime against humanity. In the absence of figures, I moderated the matter on the importance of the payments. -->
De Gaulle prevents the development of an insurrectionary armed situation (see French history), by amalgamating the movements having taken part in Resistance to the regular army resulting from the army of armistice confined in Africa (from which number of frameworks had been Vichyist before joining in 1942). Not without evil, the resistant ones of the French Forces of the interior ( FFI ) and of the Francs-tireurs and in favor ( ftp ) are integrated in the regular army without too many jolts. The integration of the patriotic militia of the PCF is negotiated against their participation in the government and the amnesty of Maurice Thorez.
In the name of the rebuilding of the country and in order to make it possible France to hold its row lately restored at the sides of the allies, the purification of the administration is limited. Certain senior officials calls upon the continuity of the State like act of resistance. The police officers of which a part continued the resistant ones clear by an insurrection in Paris the day before the Release. Certain collaborators are made forget by integrating regiments of FFI or while engaging in the task force of the Far East (volunteer in Indo-China), which is exploited thereafter by propaganda Việt Minh.
France forgets that it was anglophobe and petainist after the bombardment of Mers el Kebir, that French gendarmes kept the concentration camp of Drancy and convoyed the convoys of deportees to the border. However, the proportion of Jews of pre-war period having survived is most important of all the occupied countries, although the Jews says stateless people were much protected than the French Jews. For a time, the French legislation considered that only the Germans can be continued for Crimes against humanity. The lawsuit lacked Bousquet as well as the late lawsuits of Paul Touvier and Maurice Papon is emblematic of this policy.
Consequences in the United States of America
The United States of America take the initiative to adopt a positive attitude . They imposed the democracy, particularly in Germany and with the Japan, through a purification and a control of the wheels of State and education. In parallel, they provide as from 1947 an economic aid to the rebuilding of Europe, known under the name of Marshall plan. This one allows a fast rebuilding of the Western economies, completed with the beginning of the year 1950, and avoids with the populations temptation to be given up with Communism or the neofascisms. At the conclusion of the Second world war, the United States is with the the USSR one of both plus world great powers. The United States has the first fleet of war, the first merchant fleet, they hold 75% of gold stocks of the world (from where the currency “ dollar ace good ace gold ”, the dollar is as sure as gold).
Consequences in the USSR
Stalin is not remains and was one of the big winners of the conflict. The Red Army put out of combat more than 85% of the German soldiers and rightly seems the principal winner of Hitler. The prestige and the role of the Soviet Union leave grown well beyond the only communist circles. Reinstated in the concert of the nations, the USSR is permanent member of the Safety advice. For the Russians, this patriotic Great War carried out on the face of the East called upon the survival of the nation. While carrying a toast with the Russian people at the time of the procession of the victory, on June 24th, 1945, Stalin the return of the USSR confirmed to more accentuated form of nationalism large-Russian even of chauvinism, with depend on the national minorities and, well quickly, on the “cosmopolitan” Jews.
Annexations of 1939 - 1940 are confirmed, and others came to be added to it to the victory. The USSR increased its surface of 475.000 km ² and its population of 24 million inhabitants, subjected at once to a very brutal sovietization by terror. In addition, the nations of what one will call the Europe of the East fall under control from the the USSR. The line border separating this unit from country of Europe Western, and named by the Westerners Iron curtain, was thereafter the theater of the Cold war. Behind this last, the Stalinist system is gradually imposed for decades on an immense empire going from East Berlin on the North Korea, while waiting for the swing of China and Vietnam in the communist camp.
However, the USSR leaves impoverished considerably war, which cost him more than 25 million deaths, as well as the worst destruction ever undergone by a belligerent in the human history. In 1945, an official commission estimates that the cost of the destruction is equivalent to the double of the investments authorized at the time of the two five-year plan first of the years 1930. Lastly, technologically, the Soviet Union shows a delay on America, from which it breaks the nuclear monopoly only in 1949.

In all approximately 11 million people was assassinated by the Nazi criminals and their relays: nearly six million Pole, including three million Jews and three million catholics; three million Jews of the other countries of Europe; and two handicapped person, Gypsy million, homosexual, witness of Jéhovah and other.
In Asia, the historians evaluate between 10 and 30 million the number of deaths caused by the exactions of the mode Showa, of which 2,7 million only for the operation kills all, plunders all, burns all ( sankô sakusen ) carried out in the north of China by the general Yasuji Okamura.
Exactions and war crimes
Many massacres of civilians or war crimes are perpetrated during this conflict:

Among the various war crimes, one can quote:
-
pseudo-medical experiments of many doctors Nazis in the doctor, concentration camps in particular Mengele
-
in France (massacres made by the Nazis, having touched more: 30000 people)
- executions of hostages by the Germans with Chateaubriant, in Paris, in Lyon, in Limoges, etc starting from the autumn 1941. The historian Serge Klarsfeld drew up the list of 1007 hostages and resistant shot to the Mount-Valérien close to Paris, from which 117 were Jewish.
- Massacre of Oradour-on-Glane, most important with 654 victims of which women and children, carried out by the Division S Das Reich. There were 4 survivors.

-
In the " Protectorat" of Bohemia-Moravie:

-
in Poland
- starvation and deportation of the Ghetto of Warsaw
- “cleaning” of the ghetto of Warsaw by the S after the insurrection of the last survivors
- extermination of: 50000 members of the Polish elites by the S and the Gestapo (priests, aristocrats, professors, officers). Secondary education, the seminars and the universities were closed, just like the theaters for example, and it is only with one remarkable system of clandestine courses - the komplety - that the Poles managed to inform and save five age groups of graduates (Jacques Sémelin, Without weapons vis-a-vis Hitler. Civil resistance in Europe , Payot, 1996)
- massacre of: 5000 Polish officers with Katyń, by the Soviet army (the USSR recognized its responsibility after several decades, having a long time shown the Nazis to be responsible for this massacre)
- massacre of: 10000 other Polish officers in other places, is: 15000 people killed coldly of a ball in the nape of the neck by the NKVD, ancestor of the KGB
- destruction to 90% of Warsaw by the German army after the rising of the Armia Krajowa of at October 2nd, 1944. The repression of the insurrection by Himmler made: 150000 with: 200000 dead. Means lack to cross the Vistula and immobilized by order of Stalin for political reasons, the Red Army let the Germans crush the Polish rebellion and neither to weapons nor assistance brought to him.
-
in Soviet Union
- starvation and put at death premeditated of Russian prisoners of war (2 million dead)
- starvation deliberated on the civilians of the city of Leningrad besieged (700 000 victims)
- 20 million citizens of the Soviet Union is killed, including one very great number of prisoners of war carried out by German, and also of the civilians whose villages and cities are destroyed.
-
in Yugoslavia
- deportation of tens of Serb thousands of , Jewish and Roms in the camps of dead (in particular in the Concentration camp of Jasenovac) by the Croatian Oustachi. Those are responsible for the total massacre from 300.000 to 400.000 people, as well as the multiple conversions forced with Catholicism.
It is still necessary to mention the summary execution of civilians and soldiers combined in uniform (in particular certain paras parachuted by SOE in order to frame the maquis as well as some pilot, whose Martin Bormann authorized and encouraged lynching in 1944).

The decision taken in August 1937 by Hirohito to approve a directive of its staff removing the application of the International treaties on the protection of the prisoners of war resulted in the death of several million civilians in China. Extended as from 1941 to the other conquered countries, this measurement caused the death of a phenomenal quantity of civilians and allied prisoners held under atrocious conditions (testimony of Roger Cyr of Royal the riffles.
Among the crimes of the armed shôwa, most notable is the following:
- abduction at sexual ends of more than 200.000 “Women of comfort”, especially of Korean by the Japanese soldiers
- in China
- Massacre of Nankin during which the Japanese troops plunder the city however evacuated by the Chinese troops and massacre between 150.000 and 300.000 civilians after having made various exactions whose rapes in series
- Opération “kills all, plunders all, burns all” ( sankô sakusen ) set in motion in May 1942 in the north of China and having resulted in the death of approximately 2,7 million civilians. ** Massacre of approximately: 250000 civilians of the Zhejiang and the Jiangxi, April in August 1942, in reprisals with the Raid of Doolittle on the Japanese ground on April 18th.
- experimentation of bacteriological weapons on thousands of Chinese, Korean and Russian prisoners by the Unit 731
- with Singapore, massacre from 25.000 to 50.000 civilians during “the purification” (Daikenshô or Sook Ching) led from February 18th to March 4th, 1942
- in Malaysia
- execution of 161 allied prisoners (Australian, British and Indian) with Parit Sulong in January 1942
- in Burma
- massacre of approximately 600 civilians in June 1945 with Kalagon.
- with the Filipino, the Tribunal of Tokyo identified 72 massacres of scale of which:
- walk of died of Bataan (approximately 20.000 dead) from April in May 1942
- massacre of 2.500 civilians with Calamba
- massacre of 800 civilians in the St-Paul College of Manila
- massacre of approximately 100.000 civilians in February 1945 with Manila * with Laha
- execution of 55 Australian prisoners and 30 Dutch prisoners on February 9th, 1943
- with Bangka
- massacre of 65 Australian nurses on February 14th, 1942
- with Andaman
- massacre from 2.000 to 3.000 civilians with Port Blair of March 23rd, 1942 in August 1945, including the 800 on August 14th, 1945.
Cannibalism
Several written reports/ratios and testimonys colligés by the Australian Section of the War crimes of the Court of Tokyo and analyzed by the investigator William Webb (the future judge as a chief of the Court), show that the Japanese soldiers made acts of Cannibalisme against the allied prisoners. In many cases, these acts were justified by the famine but according to the historian Yuki Tanaka, " the cannibalism was often a systematic activity undertaken by whole sections and under the command of officiers."According to the testimony of many prisoners like the Indian soldier Hatam Ali, the victims were sometimes cut up alive. Highest graded known having practiced the cannibalism are the lieutenant-general Yoshio Tachibana, who with 11 members of his personnel, was judged to have made decapitate and have eaten an American aviator in August 1944 with Chichi Jima and the Mori vice-admiral to have eaten a prisoner at the time of a held reception in February 1945.
Concentration camps in North America
Following the surprised attack of Pearl Harbor by the Japanese, a movement of xenophobia seized North America. Thus, more than 100.000 American of Japanese origin were imprisoned in concentration camps in American Midwest. Canada, to a lesser extent, with also held of the Japanese in concentration camps.
Chemical weapons and bacteriological
In Europe, the Poison gas were not used in the engagements between belligerents, but only against the off-set civilians, in the death camps Nazis. Important gas reserves Tabun and Sarin were found in Germany in 1945, sufficient to kill out of the million people. They were immersed in concrete boxes under the English Channel. One worries about their state of conservation today. In Asia however, work of the historians Yoshiaki Yoshimi and Seiya Matsuno, show that Hirohito allowed as of July 1937 the systematic use of pollutant gases against the Chinese army and the civil populations. By fear of the reprisals and in order to make sure that these weapons are never used against Western interests, each use was specific the directive object approved by the emperor and transmitted by the chief of staff of the army, the prince Kotohito Kan' in (the general Sugiyama as from 1940). Since 1939, the chemical weapons were employed in the USSR and Mongolia then with the Filipino in 1942.
In 2004, Yoshimi discovered however in the Australian public records of the documents showing that pollutant gases had been tested on Australian prisoners and Dutch in 1944 in Indonesia.
To these chemical weapons, are added the bacteriological weapons produced by the Unité 731 and used on several occasions against of the civilians in China and against the Soviet army at the time of the Bataille of Halhin Gol.
Rapes of war
See the article: Women of comfortAll the belligerent troops of the Great War had made or let make many rapes of war (Stephan Audoin-Rouzeau and Annette Becker, 14-18. To find the war , 2000). The phenomenon did not reproduce as much in 1939-1945. Contrary to the Japanese army, the German army strictly prohibited the rape, automatically punished death; it seems to be judged by the Wehrmacht like inducing a serious risk of disordered state and indiscipline. On the other hand, several thousands of rapes perpetrated during the countryside of Italy by Tabors Morrocans were recognized and compensated by France after 1945. The Red Army , especially, was explicitly encouraged, in reprisals with the massive exactions of Reich in the USSR, to terrorize the German populations by the rape and plunderings with large scales: according to the historian Ian Kershaw, nearly two million Allemandes of the invaded east, that is to say close to one on five, underwent into 1945 systematic violences of the Soviet soldiers. In theoretically allied Yugoslavia, Milovan Djilas had to complain in person with Stalin about thousands about rapes, the Soviet dictator answering him cynically that the Red Army had endured enough not to have to be delayed with this kind of recriminations (Milovan Djilas, Conversations with Stalin , 1964)
Bombardments of the Axis and the Allies
The air Service of the Japanese imperial army and that of the navy carried out, of 1937 to 1945, a systematic bombardment campaign against civil objectives in the Far East and even against the town of Darwin in Australia. The most tested zones were the Chinese big cities like Shanghai and Chongqing. With the autumn 1937, the violence of the bombardment of Nanjing and Guangzhou involved a resolution of blame of the Committee avisor of the Far East of the Société of the Nations against Japan. Lord Cranborne, the under-secretary of State to the Foreign affairs of Great Britain, put forth his own declaration of indignation. “The words cannot express the feeling of deep horror with which the news of these raids was received by the civilized world. They are often directed against places far away from the zone of real hostility. The military objective, if there exists, seems to take a secondary place. The principal goal seems to be to inspire terror by the massacre of the civilians…”Some consider that the combined bombardments, of which those made with Dresden, Berlin, Hamburg, Tōkyō and especially the atomic bombardments of Hiroshima and Nagasaki constitute war crimes. Others point out that the purpose of these bombardments were to sap the moral one and will to fight powers of the Axis and thus to hasten the end of the war.
In Japan, in particular, the high command would have been ready to sacrifice several million soldiers. Finally the release of the thousands of atolls occupied by Japanese was very expensive in lives. It should be specified that Japan, vast archipelago rather far away from the coasts, had never known an enemy unloading nor a foreign occupation in addition to 2.500 years of history. If the controversy on the need for releasing or not the atomic bombs will undoubtedly find never end, it is a fact that the war ended than ten days less later, and that the decision makers and the public opinions were delighted some without immediately perceiving the specificity of the atomic bombardment compared to the innumerable destruction of cities to which the war had already accustomed.
In Germany: 600000 people, primarily out of the civilians, are killed at the time of the strategic bombardments allied. (See Operation Gomorrah)
Other crimes

Deportation of Soviet minorities by Stalin
As of pre-war period, Stalin regards the frontier minorities as suspect by definition, and in preparation for the conflict which approaches, orders during the Grandes Purgings of 1937-1938 the preventive deportation of hundreds of thousands of Pole, Finnish, Latvians, but also, at the Asian border, of many Chinese and 170.000 Koreans who find themselves in Central Asia. At the time of the Pact germano-Soviet, the USSR breaks any resistance to the sovietization forced by off-setting 1939 with 1941 more than 300.000 lately annexed Poles, as well as many Moldavians, Baltes, etcConsiderable forces have been then distracted from the face in full German offensive of the summer 1941, in order to off-set the totality of the German of the Volga and the remainder of the USSR, descendants of colonists present for two centuries. In spring 1944, under the false charge of collaboration, fourteen people representing two million victims, of which entirety of the Tchétchènes - Ingouches, of the Tatars of the Crimea, the Kalmouks, Karatchaïs, etc are off-set collectively in Siberia and Central Asia. The deportation of the 600 00 Tchétchènes, women, children, Communist militants and soldiers decorated included/understood, was accomplished in six days by NKVD in March 1944, which to date remains the most intense deportation of the history. The goods of the off-set people were yielded to Russian colonists, their often removed autonomous republics and their debaptized cities, and in 1949, a decree of the Supreme Soviet declared that the people " punis" would remain exiled with perpetuity. These measurements were repealed only under Khrouchtchev then under Gorbatchev.
With the resumption of the Baltic States, of the Ukraine and Eastern Poland (1945), new massive deportations with the Gulag struck the simple suspects, the local collaborators of the Nazis, but also the resistant nationalists who had fought at the same time against the Germans and the Soviets and who often refused to deposit the weapons, finally the civil populations shown wrongly or at a rate of supporting the latter. According to Anne Applebaum and Jean-Jacques Marie, 6 to 10% of the Baltic populations or Moldavian are thus in deportation at the end of the years 1940. Massive raids of suspects also take place progressively projection of the Red Army in Eastern Europe: thus disappeared without return like thousands from others, in February 1945 in Budapest, the hero of the rescue of the Jews Raoul Wallenberg.
It is necessary to add to them the hundreds of Soviet thousands of soldiers off-set during the war for " défaillance" or for critical spirit, such Alexandre Soljenitsyne stopped on the face of Poland in February 1945 to have questioned the military engineering of Stalin. Many former prisoners of war, remains of the army Vlassov, hard-working civilians voluntary or forced in Germany, were also treated as culprits with their return to the country, and went to form the generation of post-war period of the prisoners of the Gulag. As for the hundreds of thousands of prisoners of war German and Japanese, the last were slackened only in the middle of the Années 1950.
Expulsion of the German minorities of Central Europe and Japanese women of the Pacific
- There was in Central Europe (Prussia, Czechoslovakia, Poland and Baltic States) of the German establishments since many centuries. The German of Sudètes, whose spokespersons had requested fastening from Germany, had served as a pretext for the dismantling of Czechoslovakia, granted by the Accords of Munich in 1938. Other minorities, through Balkans and the Baltic States, were dispersed, and since 1939, Hitler had undertaken " rapatrier" these Volksdeutsche on the territory of Large Reich, stains entrusted to Eichmann.
- After the catch of these territories by the Soviet army, of many Germans, of which much had collaborated with the Nazis, was expelled or fled these areas for Germany or Austria, under often dramatic conditions.
- More than one million German of the Volga, descendants of colonists called by the tsars at the 18th century, were off-set in Siberia by Stalin as of the summer 1941.
In all, 8 million Germans was expelled in 1945 of the Central and Eastern Europe, including 2 million the old territories of Reich located of the east of the Oder-Neisse line, and yielded to Poland.
A comparable phenomenon occurred in Asia: 13 million Japanese had to leave Korea, China and the Pacific Islands conquered at the 19th century by the empire of Sun-Raising. This important surge of refugees on an Japanese archipelago in ruins increased the challenges of the rebuilding in the immediate future. But the resolution in the long term of the problem contradicted the propaganda of pre-war period, which judged Japan " surpeuplé" and which had seen solution only in the territorial expansion.
The cultural damage
The Shoah is also an irrevocable cultural catastrophe. The yiddishland of Central and Eastern Europe is practically destroyed, and it is estimated that the three quarters of the speakers of the Yiddish disappeared during the war. If France lost “only” the quarter of its Jewish population, and that the world French Jew as such continuous existing, on the other hand, the brilliant Jewish communities of Amsterdam, Berlin, Vienna, Budapest or Vilnius were éradiquées without return, with more than 90%. The Nazis also sought to erase any trace of the Jewish past multiséculaire by despoiling their victims of all their goods and works of art (Aryanisation), by destroying the synagogs, by burning prayer books, while turning over the cemeteries. In the occupied countries, the Nazis flew of innumerable works of art, Jewish collections at the head. This artistic plundering is orchestrated particularly by Hermann Göring and Alfred Rosenberg. According to the historian Marc Mazower, the agents of Rosenberg, only in Western Europe, plundered for 674 goods trains, pieces of furniture and object seized in the apartments of the off-set Jews. The Germans also took along many private archives and public of any kind, of which much was lost, or recovered by the Russians who dissimulated them during one half-century. If part of the stolen treasures is discovered by the Anglo-Saxons with the fall of Reich and is returned to the rightful owners, the USSR then Russia always refused to restore certain masterpieces appearing in the spoils of the Red Army in 1945, thus celebrates it “Trésor of Priam”. The Nazis also and destroyed that there fabrics representative of what they described as “degenerated Art”. For example, they organized with the garden of Tileries, on May 27th, 1943, an auto-da-fe of 500 works of Picasso, Leger, Klee and Ernst.
Many Japanese old cities, especially made of wood and paper, flamed under the bombardments. Cities such Kyoto however were saved by the American bombers because of their prestigious inheritance. In Europe, the Abbey of the Mount-Cassin, cradle of the monachism Benedictine at the 6th century, was used as battle field in 1944.
The historian Jörg Friedrich drew up the list of the patrimonial damage undergone by the German cities: thus, were radically devastated cities such Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, Dresden, Nuremberg, Breslau, or good number of medium-sized cities to last very prestigious the such Potsdam, Freiburg, Ulm, Würzburg, or Bayreuth. The 28 cities of the Ruhr also were hard bombarded and flooded. In addition to various cathedrals, palates and historical centres, for example flamed the native houses of Goethe, Kleist, Martin Luther or the Grimm brothers.
Jörg Friedrich also establishes that some 40% of the total German files were lost, like some 8 million works of the public libraries, of which irreplaceable thousands of theses, invaluable Incunable S and manuscripts. As example, the Bavarian national library of Munich lost 500.000 volumes, that of Hamburg 650.000, that of the University of Münster 360.000. According to the historian, “one had never burned as many books of the history of Humanity”. However, the majority of the works, documents and removable works of art, dissimulated in mines, bunkers or farms, were preserved.
John Keegan notes that the German destruction caused the end of the Renaissance center of Rotterdam (destroyed in May 1940), of all the old city of Warsaw, of the City of London, of Tsarkoie Selo close to Leningrad. Bordeaux is the only large port of the French Atlantic coast to leave about unscathed the war. The medieval center of Caen and Rouen was devastated by the American bombardments and the street battles, Vienna and Budapest damaged at the time of their conquest by the Russians. However, it raises, of the jewels such Oxford and Cambridge were never bombarded, nor Athens or Venice. Paris suffered little in its inheritance, and the Germans blew up all the bridges of Florence in August 1944, except the Ponte Vecchio the most prestigious, oldest and.
After the war, much of downtown areas and monuments have being rebuilt with the identical one. Some remained in the state as memorial, the such church of the memory on Küdamm of Berlin. Impacts of balls are still seen on certain frontages of Parisian monuments, thus at the Military academy, the École des Mines or on the Law courts. Other devastated cities were post-war period the laboratory of the modern Urbanisme, thus the rebuilding of the Havre entrusted to the architect Auguste Perret.
Posterity of the Second world war
See also: Posterity of the Second world war
The end of the planetary conflict does not mean everywhere the return to peace. At the same time anti-Soviet guerillas and antiallemandes continue to fight with the borders of the Ukraine and the Baltic States until in 1946, even until the end of the Années 1940. Greece as of December 1944, China in 1945 sink in the civil war until in 1949, while long wars of independence start immediately in Palestine, in Indonesia, in Indo-China. The Massacre of Sétif, occurred the very same day of the German capitulation (May 8th, 1945), announces future the Guerre of Algeria (1954).
After the Second world war the power struggles took shape which characterized the Cold war, but also a great number of current geopolitical situations.
The historical work of reconstitution of this period is always in progress, and prone to many controversies, suitable to exacerbate the national sensitivities: French collaboration under Vichy in is an example. The confrontations violent one between collaborators and resistant in France, Italy or in Balkans, caused durable traumatisms, and the fatal conflict in ex-Yugoslavia (1991-1995) saw re-appearing explicitly many old resentments. In Asia, the old victims remain ulcerated and worry about the Japanese Révisionnisme, the more so as the government of Tokyo delayed with really recognizing the faults of the past.
In addition, the Jewish holocaust in particular gave place to an important programme of compensations for war. However, the Allies did not wish to repeat the error of the compensations too heavy required for Germany after the First World War, which made it possible the country to know a “economic miracle”, and to integrate the Economic community of coal and steel (ECSC), prelude to the European Community. The Marshall plan made it possible the European economies to be rebuilt.

Radiophony
The radio was during all the war a weapon of fundamental Propagande. Under the occupation Nazi, million Europeans listened to each day seals of it the BBC, which the emissions in all the languages maintained the hope. Winston Churchill galvanized the Parliament, the British nation and the occupied people with blow of broadcast speeches, and Charles de Gaulle, called the " Micro" general; by Vichyist propaganda, was a long time only one vote for much of French.
The radio of London accommodated the famous chronicles of Jean Oberlé, Maurice Schumann and Pierre Dac within the framework of the emissions " Honor and Patrie" and " The French speak in Français". The enormous audience acquired by their enemy, the frightening speaker ultra Collaborationniste Philippe Henriot, obliged the Résistance to carry out this last (27 June 1944).
Also passed to the posterity the emissions antinazies of Thomas Mann, which joutait with Goebbels beyond the Atlantic, or the chronicles of Georges Orwell in Great Britain. Avid of impartial news, much of French-speaking people appreciated also radio Switzerland, and in particular the famous leading articles of Rene Payot.
Each camp used with its microphones of the nationals of the enemy country to sap moral its civilians and of its soldiers. As of the Funny one of War, Goebbels made speak with the microphone about Radio-Stuttgart, not without success, the French traitor Paul Ferdonnet and the British William Joyce known as " Lord Haw Haw" , what collected million listeners at the Allies, while Nippo-American, called a " the Rose de Tokyo" by GI, was charged by Japan with persuading the Americans to cease the combat in the Pacific. Conversely, the ml Paulus, overcome of Stalingrad, spoke with the radio about Moscow.
Five volumes of French chronicles of BBC were published by Jean-Louis Crémieux-Brilhac under the title the voices of freedom. Here London , French Documentation, 1975.
Journalism
Many great writers were correspondents war, thus the American Ernest Hemingway who testified to the Libération of Paris, or on the Russian face the novelists Ilya Ehrenbourg and Vassili Grossman, which was the first journalist to discover the ruins of the Death camp of Treblinka.
Narrowly censured by the Germans and their collaborators, and often compromised, the press was subjected to a severe purification in released France, the historian Patrick Eveno estimating that 90% of the titles disappeared or changed hand.
Time was thus replaced by Le Monde as of December 1944, the Car by the Team , or Paris-Evening by the Parisian one Released . Founded in full clandestinity, of many newspapers of Resistance started also a more or less long career, with the image of Libération , Franc-Tireur or Dauphiné Libéré . Combat , which sticks Albert Camus to the Release, perdure thus until in 1972, just as French Letters of Louis Aragon, re-examined literary which saw its founders Jacques Decours and Georges Politzer shot by the occupant as of 1942. Defense of France , founded in the basement of the Sorbonne on July 14th, 1941, generates France-Evening in September 1944.
Photographs
Among the many photographers of war, one can quote Robert Capa, present the D-day on the beaches of Omaha Beach.
Many photographs to the less known authors of the general public entered the collective memory, thus celebrate it stereotyped Americans planting the spangled banner at the top of Iwo Jima, or that of the Soviets Iegorov and Kantara attaching the red flag on the Reichstag.
Literature
See also: Literary works inspired by the Second world war
Founded in clandestinity, the Éditions of Midnight maintained intellectual resistance in France, publishing in particular the Silence of the sea of Vercors (1941), a call to oppose a dumbness worthy to the attempts of seduction of the occupant.
Collective collections such as the black Book or the Honor of the Poets (1943) retorted to the writers collaborationnists such as Céline, Brasillach, Lucien Rebatet. Famous authors the such Norwegian Nobel Prize Knut Hamsun or the Italian philosopher Giovanni Gentile reflect also their feather with the service of the German cause.
Many writers chose not to publish throughout war not to have to pass by the services of editors controlled by the occupant, thus André Malraux or Roger Martin of Gard. However, in France, where the cultural life was particularly animated and brilliant during the war, a very broad part of the theatrical, literary or philosophical production did not make any allusion to the conflict in progress, many creators seeming to put up itself more or less with the German seizure on their editors in particular and the cultural life in general (Philippe Burrin, France at the German hour , Seuil, 1995).
Many poets wrote for the Résistance, thus Louis Aragon component the Rose and the Reseda for exalter the union of " that which believed in the sky, that which did not believe pas" in it; , or Paul Éluard component Freedom or singing the martyrdom of Perished Gabriel. They were sometimes victims of repression, thus Robert Desnos in France, Kak Munj in Denmark.
Witnesses seeking to analyze the causes of the war and the defeat produced works that their recognized clearness and their smoothness of writing make always usable today, thus the historian Marc Bloch (shot for Résistance by the Nazis) writing the Strange Defeat as of the summer 1940, or the catholic philosopher Jacques Maritain, militant of the Free France, publishing Through the disaster in New York.
Many contemporaries held of the diaries often of great quality, such Ernst Jünger, affected in the occupying forces in Paris, the resistant professor Jean Guéhenno in France, or in Amsterdam the very young person Anne Frank, victim of the Shoah.
The immense traumatism caused by the Deportation is reflected as of the immediate post-war period in the many accounts produced at once by survivors of the Concentration camps, which they are political ( the Mankind of Robert Antelme, the Universe concentrationnaire of David Rousset, price Goncourt 1946) or Jews (thus Primo Levi).
After its conclusion, the Second world war was not going to cease being an inexhaustible source of inspiration and reflection for the authors, whom they or not lived the events. In would still testify, very recently, the best-seller of the Bienveillantes of Johnattan Littel (2006).
