The Second Rhapsody ( Second Rhapsody ) is a work for Piano and Orchestre of the American Compositeur George Gershwin, made up in 1931. It was and is even appreciated and known that the first Rhapsodie, the Rhapsody in Blue, composed in 1924.

History

In 1930, George Gershwin and her brother Will go, were invited to Hollywood to compose the music of the film Delicious . George taken seven weeks to compose the sound Screen to note that only four songs, with " sequence of rêve" and a minute of six minutes the orchestral sequence entitled New York Rhapsody would be include in film.

When it returned to New York in February 1931, it had decided to use the material of the six minutes sequence and to work it to make a work in concert of it. It had already made some sketches of them. It completed the part, long fourteen minutes, in May. New work was in an original manner entitled Rhapsody in Rivets during the composition, but more, it was not able to decide between New York Rhapsody and Manhattan Rhapsody . The final title was thus decided like Second Rhapsody .

The first took place in Symphony Hall of Boston by the Symphony orchestra of Boston under the direction of Serge Koussevitsky the January 29th 1932, with the type-setter with the piano. The first New Yorkean took place later five days.

The version most often heard nowadays is an D-orchestration of Robert McBride. The majority of the orchestrations of Gershwin were simplified. Moreover, eight supplementary measures were added to the réexposition. Michael Tilson Thomas was a defender of the original version of Gershwin. For its recording of 1985 like for its following performances, it used the original manuscript.

Even if there is a cartoon of 1941 of Friz Freleng entitled " Rhapsody in Rivets" , the music is inspired by the Second Hungarian dance of Liszt, and not of Gershwin.
