It was the first season for the Hurricanes of the Caroline which replaced the Whalers de Hartford as well as the first season for Lindy Ruff as a trainer of the Sabers of Buffalo. He is currently the trainer posts some since longest (2007). Moreover, it was the last season when the system of localization of the metal disc of Fox ( FoxTrax ) was used. Lastly, the Maple Leafs of Toronto played their last season in the Western conference.
