Season LNH 1996-1997

The season LNH 1996 - 97 was the 80 ème regular season of the National league of hockey. Twenty six teams played each one 82 matches. It was the first season for the Coyotes of Phoenixes, known before under the name of Jets of Winnipeg.

The March 25th 1997, the Whalers de Hartford announced that they provided to move at the end of the season in the Connecticut and that they would be known in the future under the name of the Hurricanes of the Caroline.

The season marked the retirement of Craig MacTavish, last player of the league still in activity to be played without helmet of protection.

Regular season

The Bruins of Boston had less point of the league at the conclusion of the season and did not take part in the eliminatory series, that made thirty years that had not arrived any more. The Avalanche of Colorado holder of the Coupe Stanley finishes better team of the season preceding the Stars of Dallas and the Devils of the New Jersey.

The Red Wings de Détroit gain the series 4 matches with 0 and the Coupe Stanley and Mike Vernon gains the Trophée Idiot Smythe.
