The season LNH 1978 - 79 was the 62e regular season of the National league of hockey.
For the first time for a long time (Season LNH 1941-42), the number of frankness was going to decrease this season. Indeed, the Barons de Cleveland and the North Stars of Minnesota being too weak financially speaking, the decision was made to amalgamate the two franknesses and to thus pass to 17 teams.
These 17 teams played each one 80 matches.
The match of stars did not take place. Since its systematization, it was the first cancellation, the cause being a match of hockey between a selection of players of the league against the Soviet team of hockey (the latter gained the match).
The 7th match of the series east can be one of the most memorable matches of the history of the league. Whereas there remain 4 minutes to be played in the match, the score is with equality and Rick Middleton of the Bruins of Boston registers a goal and gives advantage 4 to 3 with its team.
One minute fifteen later, the referee, John D' Amico, calls a penalty of team against Bruins for excess. Guy Lafleur of the Canadian of Montreal benefits then from the numerical superiority to register the goal which makes it possible to the two teams to play the prolongations.
The goal of the victory for the Canadians will be registered by Yvon Lambert.
The Canadian of Montreal gain the series by 4 victories against 1 and thus gain fourth once of continuation the Coupe Stanley.
