The January 25th 1943 took place a meeting of the league in order to improve the eliminatory Séries. Thus, it was decided to begin the series the March 20th and that the series would be played best of the 7 matches. However, after midday even of this meeting whereas the president of the league Frank Calder discussed with the owner Americans (Red Dutton), the trainer of the Maple Leafs of Toronto pointed out that Calder did not have the air well. Calder answered that it was nothing and that it felt well when suddenly its face contracted pain. It took some steps then declared " my God, there is something which does not turn out badly! ". He was brought to his hotel room to rest and the doctors diagnosed an heart attack. On the insistence of a specialist, Calder was allowed at the St.Michael hospital of Toronto where it had one second attack. After one past week at the hospital, Calder could turn over to Montreal and was allowed with the general hospital of Montreal. He died of an heart attack in this same hospital whereas he was consulting a book of the league. He was then 65 years old and was replaced by Dutton. This year there, the team of the Canadian of Montreal continued to progress and Dick Irvin their trainer made play units Elmer Lach, Toe Blake and Joe Benoit which constituted the “ Punch Line ”. Since Howie Morenz during Season LNH 1929-30, Benoit became the first player of Canadian Hockey to exceed the symbolic mark of the 30 goals. However, the Canadians qualified only one small point and were eliminated in semi-finals by the Bruins from Boston.
The Red Wings de Détroit were the team of the year, finishing first of the league and with their guard - Johnny Mowers - gaining the Trophée Vézina.
Contrary to the Season LNH 1941-42, the Rangers of New York felt the influence of the Second world war by losing many their players (Art Coulter, Alex Shibicky, the Colville brothers, Bill Juzda,…).
