The season 1961 - 62 of the American Ligue of hockey was the 26e season of the league. Eight teams played each one 70 matches.

The league took again its old configuration given up in 1952 with two divisions East and West. A new trophy was created on this occasion, rewarding the winner of Western division: the Trophy John D. Chick. The Trophy F.G. “Teddy” Oke was allocated as for him to the winner of Western division.

The Indians de Springfield, for a troisème consecutive season, gained the regular season and the Coupe Calder.

Change of frankness

A news frankness from the Hornets de Pittsburgh reappears and takes seat in Western division.

Les matches of the series are organized as follows:
  • the series between the first two teams of each division is played best of the seven matches. The winner is qualified directly for the final which is also played best of the seven matches.
  • the second and the third of each division clash with best of the 3 matches. The winners meet then with best of the 5 matches. Gaining argument the final.
