Sealed Knot

The Sealed Knot (“sealed node”) was a royalist association secret during the English Interrègne which aimed at the restoration Monarchie.

Its founding members are:

  • John Belasyse, 1st Baron Belasyse (1614 - 1689)
  • Sir William Compton (1625 - 1663; third wire of Spencer Compton, 2nd Earl off Northampton)
  • Henry Hastings, 1st Baron Loughborough (1610 - 1666)
  • coll John Russell
  • coll Sir Edward Villiers (1620 -1689; father of Edward Villiers, 1st Earl off Jersey)
  • Sir Richard Willis (“Willys is written sometimes”) (1613/14 - 1690)

The Sealed Knot made eight attempts at restoration between 1652 and 1659.

The greatest revolt took place in 1655 and is known under the name of Soulèvement of Penruddock, according to its leader, John Penruddock. The honest forces with the Lord Protecteur Oliver Cromwell easily put an end to this revolt.
