Seagate Technology is a company American founded in 1979 and located at Scotts Valley, in California. Seagate develops and produced hard drives.
Its sites of research and development and warehouses are located in the Silicon Valley, with Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, with Longmont in the Colorado, with Bloomington and Shakopee in the Minnesota, with Springtown in Northern Ireland and, finally, with Singapore.
It was the first company to build an hard drive 5" ¼ for computer and to equip the XBox with Microsoft.
The December 21st 2005 Seagate announces the repurchase, in actions, for 1,9 billion US dollars of its American competitor Maxtor and its fusion within the entreprise.
At the end of the transaction, the shareholders of Maxtor have 16% of the capital of the company resulting from the fusion.
By adding the market shares with the two groups (30,5% for Seagate and 13,5% for Maxtor) at the second quarters 2005, Seagate should produce nearly 50% of the hard drives in the world.
Its main competitors are Western Digital, Hitachi GST, Toshiba, Samsung and Fujitsu.
