The sea of Wadden ( Waddenzee in Dutch, German Wattenmeer in , Vadehavet in Danish) is a coastal sea which extends on 450 kilometers along the coasts from the the North Sea from the Helder to the Netherlands until Esbjerg with the Denmark while passing the zones from estuaries from the German coast, covering a zone of approximately 10.000 km ². It is limited to north and the west by the islands of the Plank.

A network of channels of tide, sandy bars, mudholes, salted marshes, and islands creates a zone of transition between the ground and the sea characterized by the daily changes from the tide, and a strong dynamics of salinity, light, oxygen and temperature. It results from it a complex system which provides an exceptional habitat to a very rich fauna and a flora.

A trilateral co-operation (Netherlands, Germany and Denmark) for the protection of the sea of Wadden was established in 1982.
