Sea of Tchouktches

The sea of Tchouktches (in Russian Чуко́тскоемо́ре ) is a marginal Mer of the Arctic Ocean bordering the north-eastern point of the Asian continent and the north-western point of the American continent (Alaska). It communicates with the Bering Sea and the Pacific Ocean by the Bering Strait. It is delimited in the West by the island Wrangel and in the East by the Mer of Beaufort. It extends from 66,5° with 80° of lattitude and 160° with 180° from western longitude.

Its surface is of approximately 595  000 km ². It is navigable only four months in the year. Its depth is lower than 50  m on 56  % of its surface. Its maximum depth is of 1  256  Mr. Its name is that of a tribe, the Tchouktches, alive on the Russian coast which borders it. The principal port is Ouelen in Russia.
