The sea of Kara (in Russian Ка́рскоемо́ре ) is a bordering Mer of the Arctic Ocean, located at the east of the Nova Zembla. It is connected to the Mer of Barents by the Détroit of Karskiye Vorota (also called strait of Kara). The Peninsula of Taïmyr and the archipelago of Severnaya Zemlya called also Ground of North or Zemble of North, separates it from the Mer of Laptev.

The sea of Kara measures 1  roughly; 450 kilometers length on 970 kilometers broad, with a surface of approximately 880  000  km ²; its average depth is of 110  Mr.

The sea of Kara receives a great quantity of fresh water of the Ob, Ienisseï, Pyasina, and Taimyra, which makes its salinity very variable.

Its principal ports are Novyy Port and Dikson, and there exists an important actvity of fishing, although the sea is covered with ice ten months out of twelve. One supposes the presence of important reserves of Pétrole or Natural gas under the sea, but that remains to be checked.

There are fears on the quantities of nuclear waste that the Russian poured there, and the effect which they will have on fauna and the marine flora.
