It is located along the east coast of the the unintermitting Antarctic between the Barrière of western ice and the Barrière of ice Shackleton.
Discovered by Australian forwarding the Antarctic of Aurora (1911-14), it was named thus by sir Douglas Mawson in the honor of the captain John Davis, navigator of the Aurora and second in command of forwarding.
