Sea of Bismarck

The sea of Bismarck is between the island of New Guinea in south-west and the arc formed by the Archipel Bismarck, which separates it from the Pacific Ocean of north in south-east. It is connected by a passage to the south to the Mer of Solomon between New Guinea and the New Britain.

It was named thus at the 19th century in the honor of the chancellor Otto von Bismarck at the time or the surrounding islands with the archipelago éponyme, the Solomon of north and the Earth of the King-Guillaume in New Guinea constituted a German colony under the name of German New Guinea

It was the place of a great Japanese naval defeat at the time of the Bataille of the sea of Bismarck during the Second world war.
